My Red Devil killed my smaller Tiger Oscar :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dude..it's a red devil in a 55gal and it killed an oscar, just like other red devils killing other tankmates which isn't rare occurance......

Agreed , like I said in an earlier post here, I wouldn't keep one in a 55 even as a wet pet much less with other fish much less with an oscar.

But dude, in a big tank with the right tankmates they can work in a community setting (for the third time). Mine was intolerant of one fish, a red islestes which I rehomed, other than that, he pretty much leaves everyone alone.

How many times have you tried it and with what size tank/tankmates?

So can sharks. it's proved every day, in public display aquariums all over the world.

I'm gonna post my observations (20+ times) in the next SW thread about incompatibility deaths, just to prove a completely inapplicable point to a fish keeper with a 600G tank.

Once again, not everybody keeping a red devil in a 300 or 600 and not everyone has a 300 or 600. Even a large aggressive community tank has a limited success with a red devil. BUT it is NOT a rare occurance when a red devil murdered a tankmate (regardless of what species or how big the tank is).

IMO a red devil do better in a solo setting than a community tank.

i don't think you have had any experience with large aggressive communities but i may be wrong, i wouldn't know since you still didn't post your experience level with these fish, tank sizes, tank mates etc, are you getting your information from what you just read on forums?

i've had good luck with 4 rd's over the years, i know of a few others (at least 10 i know personally, more who are very experienced cichlid keepers on various forums) who have a rd that are not wet pets.

IMO a red devil does fine in a community setting with the right fish and tank size (for the fourth time now), i would be more worried about a black nasty or a dovii.

Is this guy for real? It's like talking to a rock.

is english your second language? i asked a simple question and get cute grammar school insults in return. simple question, what is your real world experience with red devils? do you comprehend my question or the point i'm trying to make about large, aggressive cichlid communities? you can flame back all you want, its kind of cute ;)

Saying "this can never be a tankmate with that" all depends on the specific fish. There are tendancies (you know, that a red devil could kill everything), but your mileage will vary depending on the specific temperament of the specific fish, the tank, the decor, the location of the tank, the age of the fish, etc. etc. etc.. Drawing conclusions (and arguing redundantly) about two fish one would (or did) house together is not dependent upon those two species as tankmates happening in the past - what you have read, what you have seen, your past experiences, your common sense, all that does not mean anything about taking Fish A and sticking him in the same tank as Fish B. Anything can, and will, happen. In other words, you both are wrong...or alternatively...you both are right.

I fail to see the analogy, I never said a red devil was a good community fish in a small tank, they are fine in my experience in larger tanks with suited tankmates. To compare that to keeping a large shark in a 600g aquarium and saying 'well public aquariums do it all the time' is a bit silly but whatever entertains you I guess, this is getting a bit boring to me honestly ;)
