What could live with a Timor Monitor?

I know you feel geared-up for a monitor, but have you thought about how much long-term commitment is involved? At 13, the next few years of your life are going to be very important to your future, such as if you decide to move out for an apprenticeship, college, or get a job away from your parents house and have to get your own place. Getting a monitor lizard will prevent a lot of that, they're not the most low-maintenance pets, and not something most parents will look after for you if you have stuff to do.

If any of these scenarios worry you, I'd try and find something smaller, and less demanding. Don't kid yourself that options such as rehoming it or selling it are possible, because large monitors are notoriously difficult to get rid of once they get past the 1ft size.

At 13, you probably feel 100% committed to getting a monitor, but things do change. See it almost like a career choice - you're going to serious limit certain opportunities, not to mention it will severely dent any money you earn over the years. Talk it through with your dad, see how much responsibility he's willing to have over it should a tricky situation arise in the future. Your plans for it need to be future-proof, but if you can figure that out, then go for it.

Best,
Paul

also think about how much an enclosure, proper lighting, and it. food is going to cost in the long run. i am turning 13 next month, and my brother (a.gigas) is a monitor freak. he wont ever stop talking about it. he wont stop telling me about them. and i admit, no matter how much i want one, that i have not even a fraction of the time, money,or experience to get a monitor. if i may say an alternative, get a uromastyx, they are relatively easy to care for, and dont need as much money, and space to be happy.

Money will be the biggest problem at your age. Monitors need a lot of variety and they eat a lot... at 13 I am willing to bet you don't have a any stable job. Maybe mow lawns or do chores or something for allowance but that's not a job. How are you planning to afford all this? If it has taken so long to convince your dad to allow it I would guess he is not terribly willing to help you out to much in affording things for it... you've got a good 4 or 5 years before you need to think about moving away to college BUT that monitor will still only be a youngin when that time comes and many apartments are not animal friendly. Even if you find one that is... again.. you need to have a job to pay for it. Only now you also need to pay for that apartment, utilities, a car, a phone maybe, and school (unless you get good financial aid/scholarships). It gets expensive....
Most of us can say from experience we don't consider all those things when we are 13... or we do and we just think it will work out..... but it doesn't work out... life is cruel and once you get out on your own it gives you a very harsh taste of reality.....

As someone who keeps monitors I can tell you that they are a much bigger commitment than many of the other herp species I keep. They demand a great deal of time, space and MONEY. Once you start paying for the food bill you'll probably have second thoughts about getting one.....even when it's a dwarf species. When I was a kid I too wanted a monitor lizard (Varanus prasinus to be exact) in the worst way after I read an article about them in a Reptiles Magazine. But I knew there was no way that I had the time and commitment to give the proper care and home for one while juggling school, sports, jobs, etc. It wasn't until I was in my late 20's before I could even attempt it. Trust me, it was worth the wait and I couldn't be happier with the end results.

The blunt truth hurts sometimes, it is something that we learn with age & time don' t worry we all where young at some time.Every one just wants whats best for you & reptiles or any animal in general. But to answer your question ,what to keep with a timor, another timor. They are very costly & time consuming, you might not listen to us & do it anyway, but might be faced with a reality check, see there very smart they monitor and are great escape artist also! So take in recognition all that has ben said! They are very shy, scared of almost anything! So please i know if you get one we will help you & your pet.Check your local law first hand & find out if its even legal to own one where you live first.Might be legal in the state but some cities, follow up on diferent rules. Then a enclosure tweek out the enclosure once you have all that get a reptile & some variety of food.

Wont cover what, everything to keep one or what. Im sure that 80$ should be enough to replace and restock things that I need to. Remember im not buying the Tank, Decor, Substrate,ect... Im only responsible to replenish food

Happy birthday man!
I'm 15 and honestly, I wouldn't get the monitor if I was you. If you go to college, you pretty surely won't be able to keep it..
And trust me, you want to go to college! Better job means more money which means more cool pets :p
