Update After 4 Months - Pacu

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Really? I knew they lost their color but I didn't realize it changed that dramatically. VERY interesting, that.

I would have sworn Draco Hugo's fish was a black pacu, Colossoma macropomum. Could you please clarify on this point? I defer to your much greater knowledge on this type of fish. I'm trying to learn. :)

Nope. Here's his stock list:

In the picture, you can still see a little red on his pacu. As they get bigger and older their undersides may have a little pale salmon color, or maybe not even that much. It's very unusual to see a large red belly pacu with lots of red.

Well I'll be. Thanks.

Also, since I have your ear; could you possibly point me in the direction of a pacu-like fish that doesn't grow at a rate of something like three inches a month? I'm trying to collect all the archetypical characins. I need a disc like fish to round out my collection. Would you know something that would fit that category? I don't have a problem with the size of the pacu, I have atf after all, but I have a problem with the growth rate. Atf and the payaras I'm keeping both tend to grow slowly.

I am willing to bet money that my rescued pacu came out of this WalMart tank

Except by the time my husband found them, they looked like this in their 55 gallon tank

akskirmish has a beast of a pacu that still has some red coloration. Most magnificent pacu I've seen pictures of.

ah this pacu looks like ours but smaller. So the only way to tell what type of pacu you have is if you see it when young?

One thing to add, if you are planning on keep pacu in a big tank I would go with toughened glass, our 4 fight with one another every now and then. when they charge and hit the glass u can really feel it shake. I believe if it was not toughened and so thick they would of broken the tank.

Red bellies are the most common pacu available. They get pretty rotund. Black pacu are generally not readily available. They can get about a foot longer than red bellies, and the adults have a more elongate appearance than the rotund red bellies. Don't know that much about other pacu. Wondering what people are going to do with the albino pacus that are the recent trend on MFK.

Personally, I'd be scared to death to keep pacus in a glass tank. Ours slam into the sides of the tank so hard, it sounds like an explosion. I think they don't see the end of the tank and think they are swimming in a lake (kind of like birds flying into a glass window). We're going to be putting a background on the sides of the new tank to hopefully prevent them from slamming themselves into the walls.

To sum up: nice fish, green water...fish don't mind...humans sometimes do. Okay size tank for the fish size shown...

F1, really nice tank. And pacu mom's alias fits. Only a mom would look after her finned kids that way.

Have a good night every one!

Yes, my post count went up by one! ;)

I may have to pm you some pictures if you dont mind next time I go into the shop. All pacu here are hard to get hence why they got for 500$ + which I think is good, this stops random people buying them with no idea. Yes its harder on the pocket but all our monster fish go to good homes 99% of the time.

I trust glass much more then acrylic, they tend to use thiner acrylic for tanks and I can see it cracking easier being thinner.

The sides and back of ours is closed and driftwood in front so they dont swim into it. the never swim into the front also only when they fish they smash into one another then u can feel the force of the fish.

I love the pacu at work feeding them is always fun. carrots, peas (weird thing is even sw fish and our rays - big cat fish eat peas) bananas etc very fun to feed.
