Male or female jack Dempsey?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sometimes a female or a male needs some space to get away from their partner tending the eggs as they might get overprotective that they will kill their own partner. The bigger the tank is, more better for a breeding pair.

Yes, but I have a 55 and that will have to do for the time being. If I get a larger tank it won't be for them to breed in, it would be for the fish I have to upgrade in. The current 55 would be for them to breed in.

Ok, then don't breed them until you're able to give them their own 75g. Problem solved.

A 55g should be ok. I've seen it done before. Just make sure you have a dividor. Considering his dempsies are still very young I cannot postulate why people say tank is too small. Because its not. But you may tell him that in 3 years time. Just not now.

I kept 3 dempsies, a parrot cichlid, datnoid, featherfin cat, bala shark, and giraffe catfish in a 55gal. But I DID upgrade as they grew too big.

Well then it's a good thing they're too young to breed yet. And hopefully for the sake of your other fish your JD's won't pair off...

When are they old enough to breed?
My convicts already breed in this tank all the time and theyve killed a couple fish in breeding. Nothing too big though. My dempseys shouldn't be able to do more.

My female bred at about 6 inches and she was like 7 months( I think). I wouldn't house anything in a 55 with a breeding pair of Dempsey's. my pair have taken over half of a hundred gallon. And regularly chase away an adult male jag and a butti

Wow! When they start showing more aggression I'm getting them out of there. Gonna need them to pair off though. I'm gonna take out all my fish and measure them tommorow if the hurricane calms down. If not I'll do it when I get a chance. I think my one male (the pretty one) may be fertile. I might try and pair him off with a con. If I can get a 55. Also, how big of a con does it have to be to breed with a 5-6" jack Dempsey? Or can any size male dempsey breed with any size con? Because I have alot of 1" female cons.

Wait till the convicts get a little bigger and they can makes all large fish stay in a corner....You needs to remove the convicts if you want to breeding JD. Otherwise you can have World War III in the 55gal.
