I like this thread a lot. Between this and the "show us whats under your stand!" Sticky, i have decided to build a nice sump diy style.

good plan ....think about used pumps to save $ also maybe a used ac110 for mech.:)

As long as one is okay with sponge filters in a main display tank...

Now go up to a 300 acrylic gallon tank with limited filter slots and holes on top...

not everyone will be inclinedto think sponges are ok ,because of looks ..I know...... but these ARE options that will work... just not for everybody:popcorn:

Just some thoughts, under quoted portions below:

..guys just get bent when you question what they spent money on....
yep. but the OP's intention is to examine his own purchase of fx5... asking experienced devotees if his not-so-stellar results can be given any correctable usage tips.

You started a thread with a title that bashed a highly regarded filter system ......
............. What I am to gather is that you are simply questioning whether or not you have set it up correctly becaus you are not seeing the results that others are seeing, correct?..
the OP sure could've worded his title differently, for this forum. I Lol with him.
;-)
You get a modding award this week.
Notice, it's invisible.

The issue with canisters is that, unless they're cleaned frequently, then they're just taking the poop, uneaten food and other stuff from your tank...and hiding it in the filter...
Unholy crap Batman, I'm poisoning my fish!?
really. I thought biological processes were in there doing a Big conversion Job on the stuff....water test parameters show that. ?

Eh, no room behind tanks, against living room walls, for big HOBs.

... I just bought pond Matrix @ 4L @ 23$ from that Pet place and that would fill either filter....
some PPL don't use the large Pond matrix in canisters, preferring slower BB soak above having more flow.

You don't need nearly that much bio, all your doing is greatly reducing gph. A handful of ceramic bio or matrix is enough to support a large colony of bb, I always go more tho just incase........
Sometimes isn't it worth having extra 'seeded' bio in there, if nothing else some can be pulled out to start new filters (better than from scratch).? That's part of my thinking, as I set about stocking my 180G canister with media.
I hope to stop when I get that next tank, which THIS one is helping prep me for.
;)
Don't tell the hubby.

Due to the SALE price, I bit the bullet on an eheim 2262 for my 180G.
I feel temporarily insane right now.
Also have my finger on the button to order an fx5 @sale price: 2 filters for safety, plenty flow, and one dedicated to POLISHING. Crystal clear!
WOULD THAT BE OVERKILL? I want to try an fx5 & it's flow, while becoming a goddess of Knowing WTH I'm doing.
I have a 75G that WAY needs polishing too, has plenty of bio.

I haven't found/decided on the right coarse mechanical layers. ON SALE. thinking eheim mech prices are high.
Using seachem Matrix for bio. & purigen polish, bcuz I am deliriously gambling with my hubby's $$ forbearance!!!
Any input on mech media layers?
Oh yeah, just to up the ante on success, I'm using seachem Stability to start the 180.

@hawk, I'll let you know what I learn.
:nilly:

How will I afford fish?

yeah, seriously if all my tanks weren't in the main living area, I would have AC 110's everywhere.
IF I was capable of doing wreck-proof DIY sumps, I'd do that.

I keep the option in my mind of SMALL premade sump, for heaters, UV etc.

Contrary to a pissing contest, some of us pay for our lack of SKILLS. that's a plain truth.
On the fx5 thing. I have very much respect for them, as per reading on forum. just also a real fear of my inability to modify some hose & elbow? issues (memory may be somewhat inaccurate) which I've seen fx5 devotee men say they always do, for security purposes.

Petspoiler, some people don't realize that your bb count is based on bio load or ammonia supply from fish, they think cuz you added more bio I will get more bb.... There is a point when to much bio is not only a waste but its also slowing down your filter!

@lp. I love sf, I have one on battery backup on my main tank, that way a power outage is a picknick instead of a massacre!

I have 3 FX5's.. 2 in my 475 and one in my 180. Have a Rena xp3 in a 135, but had to add an Aquaclear 70 to keep it as clean as my FX5 tanks. Any Eheim I ever owned leaked eventually, although did a good job.

I know you say the truth on that bio aspect.
do you think I'm overdoing my tank canister(s)?. Although any overdone things (via holiday sales) is planning for some media transfer to next tank cans. some light seeding dispersed through it 'should' give a better start than nothing and there'll be plenty left for continued growth in 'robbed' tank canisters. that's what I hope anyhow. + I'd like good flow.
