+1 convicts got me into fish keeping as a hobby and was the first fish I've ever bred. I believe breeders and farmers do breed the five together for more colors. Being that they all look so close to each other that they can't tell differences and cross breed them.

+2 they were the first fish that i keep and bred as well.

Dude a half inch is small, some of my red texas project fry are a half inch theres noway that convicts breed at that size no matter how easy it is to breed them. Next time bring your ruler out because i no u miss calculated lmao.

+1 . An 1" or 1.5" is more believable. My female in the pic on the first page was1.5". .5" is barely out of fry stage.

I shouldnt even entertain this comment but im going to because even tho convicts are easy to breed they still dont breed at an half inch. I have been breeding and experimenting with convicts for 15years on and off so i know they dont breed at an half inch.

Is it possible that the half inch convict had been stunted but was fully adult? I ask this because I once had a J. transcriptus (the smallest julidiochroimis) at 2" who bred to a male J. marleri(the largest julidiochromis) that was barely 1.5". Even though they commonly grow more than six inches, this male had been left in an aquarium of J. marleri fry on a friends back porch and the tank was abandoned for two years. The water had almost totally evaporated and was thick with algae. No refills or water changes or feeding happened for those two years. When I was taking several of his fish tanks to clean out at my house(he gave them to me) I noticed something moving in one tank that had only about an inch of mucky water in it. It turns out it was a two year old J. marleri adult that survived from a fry that was, as I said barely 1.5" long and very skinny. He might have survived on mosquito larvae(outdoors in Florida) and live bloodworms that were in all the tanks except his. He went in a tank of mixed small africans. He bonded with the J. transcriptus female and produced babies several times. Normally J. marleri x J. transcriptus would be almost impossible because of the size difference, the J. marleri would kill the J. transcriptus if they were both normal sized for adults.

Could something like this have happened to create a mini-convict? I have been wondering about my own two female convicts that I just posted pictures of the other day. They are one inch and under one inch each but are colored up as if they were fully mature adults. Could they both have been stunted and be adults???

That's what balloon belly convicts are, more or less.
My female is 1 inch, and is the mother of my marbled fry, and she has not grown at all in a year and a half. Most do grow a bit, though.

Art in the situation you explained its possible cause the fish never got the proper care they needed to grow.

His convict was not a shortbody and a convict wont breed at that size no matter what verson. When i had my blood parrot x pink convict offspring (jellbean cichlid) they wouldnt breed until 1inch so that guys is lying.

Everyone says that there jellybean cichlids are not hybrid and i want to know if they know the back ground of there fish because the shortbody gene doesnt just pop up, it is created by parrot x pink convict.
I know because 2years ago i did the pairing and raised the fry up to a year and they were the same as what these people are claiming to be just a shortbody gene lol. So those of you that doesnt think a jellybean cichlid is a hybrid please explain and i doubt that you guys know the back ground of your shortbody, if you look up jellybean cichlid it shows you how its made.

Your girls aren't stunted and they are young adults. 1" is typically when cons hit adulthood. That's why I told you one of your girls were ready to pop. My female was only an inch. As you see she laid eggs.

Ernie I've read that short bodies can be caused by bad water conditions at birth. Idk how true it is though.

I really doubt it and the reason i doubt it is because i did the pairing and raised the fry and the were the exact same as what people are claiming to be just a shortbody gene, but when i ask about the background of there convict they cant tell me. They always say that they either got it from someone or the petstore lol so if you dont know how that animal was produced how can you say that its just a shortbody gene and not a hybrid?
