need a tank size before you can get any GOOD recommendations on a fish. not too many people get a first tank big enough to keep some of the species already listed in this thread.

I have a 75 gallon. Ok, ill check them out when i get home. I was thinking about just getting one or two catfish and just keeping the tank for them. Put some drift wood, rocks, and make a cave. Now that ive said that. Any ideas? And pricewise? Thank you for helping!

A synodontis species or pictus cat would still be my best suggestion. A few of the species already listed will outgrow a 75. Synos and pictus will be available at many decent lfs for less than 20$. Before you buy one, just do a quick interenet search on the species you like. Make sure you know what water conditions the fish will need. Most of those species are fairly peaceful and can be kept with almost anything and are also very easy and tolerant of water chemistry

I see you are also from Mass. (Me too.)

You obviously are referring to Bullhead cats, which are great for a 75, and will do well with cichlids, although when the catfish gets bigger, he MIGHT eat some of the smaller cichlids, but not usually.

Hell yeah man ! Where can i get a bullhead? Will lfs carry, or do i have to order online. And i will look into the other two

Catch em.

75 = good size tank for cats like: lima shovelnose... striped raphael (cool fish but shy) ....sun cats .....synodontis .... and several others

Depends on bullhead species, a 75 isn't good for any bullhead species that can reach more than 12". Yellows, blacks and browns easily surpassed 14" regularly even in capitivity and they are very messy eaters.
