I'm just curious what is the difference I have to look for when spotting these guy at a young age that around 2 inch? Inputs are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Xinguensis have more vertical stripes and lapidifers have a blotchy more mottled pattern, at least from what I've seen.

I spotted that as well but I was not sure if its really the case or not since there were some photos online of lapidifers with vertical stripes without the blotchy pattern at a young age.

Only real way to tell is the tail pattern. They are different even at a young age. Xinguensis will have full stripes through out the tail fin and lapidifer will have a few stripes and Some spotting.

Yes I own both species and I tried my best with the pics lol.

Top is xinguensis, notice just large stripes through out the whole tail and bottom pic is lapidifer, notice the 2 stripes at the end and then just smaller looking stripes in the middle there are a few spots as well.
