Help! Crack in tank!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Some local plastic shops should carry weld-on or you can find it online. You may be able to get away with not draining the tank but I wouldnt recommend it. You dont want the weld on dripping into your tank, and the added stress of the water weight (though minimal at the top of the tank) is only going to weaken the bond on top. I also would recommend using a block and clamps to hold the tank crack together while bonding after you have drilled the end of the crack

cant believe u didnt just drill it yet lol....u can drill with the tank full...have someone hold a net inside to catch the mess. You cannot patch the tank with water in it tho as the top is stressed and pushing up. Thats y it cracked but its very common. You can find acrylic scraps at your local glass shop usually for $1 and weld-on #40 online from a place like u.s. plastics.com

Step 1: Drain Tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Step 2: DRAIN THE TANK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Step 3: Find locally or buy online some weld-on #4 and a piece of acrylic. Mcmaster-carr is one such source that can ship overnight.

Step 4: Drill a small hole at the end of the crack to stop it from growing.

Step 5: Drip weld-on on the crack and let it soak/wick into the crack to repair/seal the crack.

Step 6: Use the same weld-on to meld the support bar (second link) over the crack to be safe. (I would do inside.. but outside works too..)

Step 7: Wait 7 days

Step 8: FILL THE TANK!!!! :)

Yes u can drill, wait, then drain the tank...you can even just stop there because ur patch pieces will probably pop off in the future if you dont attach them right lol im speaking from personal experience not hate. I strongly suggest you use weld-on 40. Yes it is hard to find but it is worth every penny and the wait. People will tell you #4 or #16 will work but i promise you they will eventually fail and break off. Order the #40 and two patch pieces, drain the tank and make a sandwich patch with "scrap" acrylic not strap lol....any odd sizes you can cut or find will do. Use atleast .5" acrylic for the patches....after you glue , clamp the pieces on and let them dry for a good 3 days if not a week before filling the tank again and viola ur fixed. Any more ?'s feel free to ask. Please just drill it before it really breaks
