Lfs worried about internet ruining their business

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have never ordered online. Don't plan on it. I think it's dumb to pay $60 more for a fish you're already payin a lot of money for in most cases. I always look within a couple hours of my house an if no one has anything I want I just don't buy it. I would rather
Give my business to local mom and pop shops that can get what I want than spend a fortune on shipping.... Ok my online rant is over hope I didn't offend anyone , just my opinion though.

I hear ya and I would do the same if I had good lfs options. I have one store about 45 minutes from the house that stocks most of the basics but nothing real unusual. 50% of my fish are bought there.

The other half is from online stores in my state. Shipping costs $15-20 dollars and to me is worth it to get exactly what I'm looking for. Actually going to ride over to get some fish from Gage since its only about an hour and a half from my house.

For me it's about necessity and I'd love to buy from a good lfs, but I don't have many options. Pet smart and Petco don't stock most of what I'm looking for.....

I’m not big on paying for shipping that cost more than most of the fish I am after. Luckily I plan on making an order over the phone on some not so commonly carried fish and he will order them for me and avoid shipping. He isn’t even making me put down a credit card in advance for them which I found strange but nice. I just wouldn’t want to spend $60 to ship a $20 fish.

Internet trade has been a new venue for new customers in my opinion. Most things haven't changed if you think about it. I've met a lot of people who buy things on the internet because it would never people available locally much less regionally. Because of the unavailability, their money never would have hit the market in the area anyway. Nothing to spend it on that they want. Make sense? I know bulk purchase and online deals throw some weight but its about the same as that happenning locally.

Something I've seen LFS do to survive is not only try online sales, but expand business possibilities. A few I've come across became pet stores to stay in business. They sell dogs a lot and that pays the bills well but at the same time, the fish department stays well maintained and stocked.

I used to go to a fish store in Houston that kept exotic fish and did very well. They started to do aquarium maintenance for businesses and residences. Now they're a chain.

Almost forgot to tie that... Talk with them and see if those are things they wanna try. Maybe you can go in on it and score some cash? I say this without knowing anything about the situation but you never know.

Exactly. If all there was available was the typical boring stuff I see at lfs in my area I would have quit the hobby long before now. Then the lfs wouldn't be selling me any food or supplies, either-- stuff I still buy from them if they have what I want.

My problem with lfs is there are very few anymore that appeal to or market to a serious hobbyist. I'd have no need to buy online if I still lived near some of the excellent lfs I've seen in the past, stores where they had impressive display tanks, a great selection of fish that wasn't exactly the same all the time, and where they were also brought in new or unusual fish, to the point you could look forward to spending some real time there instead of being bored in less than five minutes. The closest lfs to me has one display tank... a little 55 gal typically stocked with tetras, barbs, maybe an overpriced baby oscar or a couple of overpriced angelfish. Not going to get it done for a serious hobbyist.

Of course internet sales are killing the local fish stores. Within the last 4 years, 4 stores in my area have closed their doors. One of these shops had been around for 25+ years. On line stores don't have the overhead a LFS has. I know of one wholesaler who sells to the public. How can his steady customers (the local fish stores) make a profit if the wholesaler sells fish to the public at practically the same price. It's a tough and IMO dying business.

Not sure about the spread of big box pet stores north of the border but I think places like Pet Smart and Petco are chipping away at the smaller stores.

Agreed, but I think some of their business is at risk as well.

Keep in mind, internet sales also support mom and pop shops. Every on-line vendor I buy from is a guy working out of his house.

Totally agree, and I'm north of the border. Only 1 LFS i my town, gives terrible service, same old fish each week, and seems content with dealing with the average aquarist that wants tetras and barbs. I've tried several times to work with them to bring in stuff for me (either fish or equipment, offered to share shipping costs) but if it isnt on the shelf then I'm not going to get it. Pretty useless to the moderate to serious hobbyists. Some basic equipment but nothing high end or big. Guppy males are like $7, zebra danios are $3. Crumby africans (my current passion) that start at $15 and go up from there. We had a Petland for a few years but they closed shop last year. Even worse for fish prices. $7 for a swordtail, $10-12 for a guppy pair. That's rediculous. Next town is 1hr and has a Pet Smart and fish prices are much less (ie zebra danios $1), much more selection of fish and equipment but they are an hour away.

Nothing exceptional or even decent around here for africans so I ordered fish from someone online that is in my province. Fish that are far superior and not even available around here for significantly less money. $35 to fly them here, cheap in my mind for what I got. Why would I pay $45 for a drab inferior fish when I can get a phenominal fish flown in for $15? I don't agree with the comments about liking to get fish locally to know what they are. If they're just being boxed up and shipped from some big wholesaler (like most of them are) do you really know what you're getting? My preference is from an expert breeder that focusses on the type of fish I'm looking for. If they have a good reputation I trust them to do right by me. With all the forums out there I can quickly spread the word if someone screws me.

I also just ordered a bunch of equipment (heaters, controller etc) that aren't even available locally either. I ordered online from Vancouver, and they are a RETAIL store but experts in the field and also sell online. Excellent service and excellent prices (same online or in-store).

My experience with LFS is they have a small mentality in that they just want to cater to the average Joe that has a fish die every month in their 29g tank and just keeps replacing them. They don't want to work with those of us who are bigger into the hobby, even though we are the ones that are more likely to spend the big bucks.

I have had excellent service in some LFS's over the years but they seem to be the exception and that's too bad.

Last comment, promise! I don't like seeing people on craigslist etc. flogging convict cichlids for $1 (or whatever the fish is). I don't think that does anyone any good and really can hurt our LFS's. Don't breed if you haven't got an outlet for those dozens and dozens of fry. That just waters down the market and probably influencing the quality of fish available to all.

What you guys are saying is so true we have fish I have never seen in a lfs and that is what people are looking for. The fact is we buy a lot of product from these stores and some ofthem started out like we are and are now huge. My wife has shipped fish across Canada because we had fish no one else had or they thought it was a good deal. The truth is I don't believe many businesses started out huge they had to build their business from the ground up. A general rule of thumb is that competition is good it keeps prices fair. If there were only petsmarts or what not how many people could afford to keep fish. Not totaly sure how it averages out but I would guess that the fish is lowest cost part of the hobby the equiptment and food is where the real money is. We don't sell that so their fear of us is unfounded but kind of neat that it is there.

Should mention there is 1 store we go to in Calgary that seems to carry all the odd stuff and that is why we go there.
