Life after "Wet pet" Stocking help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just recently got two young fish after not having them for a long time. I love there laid back personalities and the beautiful colors they develope as adults. Virgil said it they will defend themselves but rarly will they look for trouble. I know he has a big belly in the pics he just got done steeling NLS pellets from the angelfish. My two are still very small about 2" +/-. Good luck if you get one. IMO one of the coolest SA cichlids around.

Sounds like the type of large Cichlid I'm looking for. Would like to get a red severum and a firemouth as well. Thanks for the advice and pics!

I like your original list minus the salvini. Depending on the one you get, they can be bastards. :) like mine! Chocolate cichlids look cool, I would replace the salvini with that idea.

I think you're right about the salvini. Thinking: 1 chocolate, 1 red spot sev, and either 2 geo's or the firemouth and a rainbow or keyhole Cichlid. I'm worried about the eventual size of the geo's and the chocolate (which I want as my main fish). I always prefer to under stock than over stock. I have plenty of time to figure it out as I completely cleaned my tank and media after my big guy died so now I'm cycling. Thanks again for the advice.

choc. ... sev and brasiliensis...:headbang2 would be a rockin good stock(with dithers) in a 125

In my 120 48x24x24 I have...

4 blood parrots
2 kissing gouramis
2 firemouths
1 convict cichlid
1 jack dempsey
1 green terror
3 silver dollars

IMO it is about maxed out but i think I could fit 2-4 more mid sized fish but I left a tiny bit of room so if I see a cool fish I could get it... Well I moved 5 fish to some of my other tanks recently and replenioshed 2 fish (my kissing gouramis)....

Nice Tex hybrid, I'm sorry about your loss...
If you don't want an overly aggressive fish stay away from Salvini's...they aren't the biggest cichlid but for their size I've found them to be one of the most aggressive (or should I say territorial maybe) fish I've ever owned.
They are a beautiful fish though, but don't have the "wet pet" personality of some of the other species as mentioned by others.
I know Dempseys are a dime-a-dozen nowadays but there's a reason. Not only are they a very attractive fish but they have a lot of personality too, on par with some Jags or Oscars.
If you like the Tex-hybrd get another Texas...not all are aggressive, some have a lot of personality (mine has the personality and excitement of a thumbtack but that's him, had others that were awesome) and they are a very beautiful cichlid I think.
Or get something rare and a little less common and see what it grows into...do what you like, not what others would do.
I agree, don't get Africans if it's your only tank...they are pretty but lame compared to the SA's/CA's unless you go Nimbichromis (JMO)
