how many of you use prime?

I think they are saying it lasts longer in as much as you use less and it lastes longer before you have to buy more. I don't think he ment lastes longer in the tank. At least that's the way I understood it.

How is the powder form used? Lasts longer? Why would you want it to last longer if you neutralize the chlorine with the liquid prime it is neutralized permanently no? Just curious as I was just looking into other products that may be cheaper. Think I will stick with prime. I dose full tank when doing 50% water changes.
Aquanero answered this for you. Sorry if my post was confusing. Safe is a more concentrated form of Prime, you use less of it at every water change. You won't run out of it as quickly as you will Prime.

This might help ............

It does neutralize ammonia which is good in the water being freshly added to the tank but if the extra remains in the tank it can continue to neutralize ammonia and starve your bacteria.

That would be incorrect. It converts free ammonia (NH3) into a form that is harmless to fish, it doesn't "remove" it hence the bacteria will not be starved of anything.

Prime removes chlorine by converting it to harmless chloride; the chloramine is removed by breaking the chlorine-ammonia bond, the chlorine is then reduced to chloride and the ammonia is then bound until it is utilized within
the biological filtration.

The smell of Sulfer or rotten eggs come from sodium thiosulphate that what you smell.

While the odor does come from the type of hydrosulfite salts used by Seachem, Prime does not contain sodium thiosulphate.

Interesting Neil, while reading the seachem information they stated "If your municipality includes chloramines in the water supplies, a standard sodium thiosulfate dechlorinator is not enough." The MSDS then states the inclusion of a "propriatery aqueous soultion of complexed Hydrosulfite salts" which in turn breaks down into sodium thiosulfate creating the sulfer odor. Perhaps I miss interperted.

I've decided I'm not using Prime anymore once I run out of what I have. Going for Safe. I'm tired of spilling the liquid stuff on my fingers and clothes.

I've been using prime for 2 years now. Once i thought i would use AquaMil+ (not sure the correct name). Big mistake. I overdosed the new water like i normally do with the prime. But this removed all the oxygen from the water. Just happened that my air stones slipped out during the water change. I lost my 20" black aro and a few other fish. Ill never switch away from prime again. Its safe if you overdose.

Tom, I took that comment as meaning that if one has chloramine treated tap water, one will require a water conditioner beyond just sodium thiosulfate. But either way, I guess that when they use the term "proprietary aqueous solution of complexed hydrosulfite salts", that could mean almost anything.

FYI ...... hydrosulfite salts = sodium dithionite, which is where the sulphur smell comes from.

Either way, the proprietary blend of salts is all top secret stuff at Seachem I suppose. :)
