how many of you use prime?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
FYI .......... Pond Prime is the exact same formula as regular Prime.

The only difference is the dosage rate, as one is for a large open system (a pond) the other is for a much smaller closed system. (an aquarium)

my personal prime regime for wc is this take my 150g.

If I am removing 50g I will put in 2 caps at the start of the change before I remove the water. Let it mix for about 15 min to disperse. Then I remove my 50g and change in the fresh 50g. I will then add in 3 caps .

I personally like to over kill my tank a bit with prime.

how do you measure for diluting the powdered SeaChem Safe.

can the dilution be stored in a bottle & remain effective?

No you can NOT make solution and store it. This product does not have buffers that allow it to stay active, it must be used directly.

Yes & no, Kent. See my previous response to this question.

You can mix it with water, but there are no stabilizing agents and according to Dr. Greg Morin from Seachem the premixed solution should be used up within 30 days.

ok, I just wondered if Safe is so condensed that it would be hard to measure "down" when small doses are needed.

I see it has a measuring scoop from which small gallons can be calculated. plus weekly bottles can be mixed.

If you are on city water, Regina's total chlorine residual is under 2 mg/l. It's actually just over 1 mg/l, when it's at it's highest peak, and has been recorded as low as .31 mg/l.

1 capful of Prime treats 50 gallons @ 5 mg/l chlorine. So in Regina, even when the chlorine rate is at its max, 1 capful of Prime will treat 100+ gallons of tap water. You could do a 90% water change on your 150 and adding 1 capful before you refill your tank would do the trick. 5 capfuls is simply wasting $$$$, but hey, it's your money. :)

Most people have no idea what their chlorine/chloramine values are. Mine are 2mg/l chloramine - constant year round.

You state that you have to use 2x the amount of prime, are you saying that you use 2 capfuls for every 50 gallons of tap water?

Yes... my water change storage barrel is 50 gals...

So you are treating for 8 mg/l chloramine?

That's twice the maximum residual disinfectant level of chloramine set by the EPA. (max of 4 mg/l)
