ATF/Dorado/Goonch/Datnoid PICS!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you saw the size of the dat he ate, and the 8 inch and thick golby, you'd be nervous too! the datnoid was way wider than his mouth and he still choked him down .... i'd say probably not, but i'm def nervous... i'd also say they'd never catch the tiger, but seeing these goonches feed and how fast they can move .... it just makes me nervous

I feel you on that man. "Never trust a catfish!"

Maybe I won't get a goonch just yet. lol

very true..... but def get one, just make sure you put a smaller expendable fish in there too! lol! plus your thoughts and passions seem similar to mine, so you'll find a way to house him even if he has to be separated, like i did

I'm hoping that by the time they come in, Max will be bigger and they'll be like 5". If they're 12" or bigger, I think I'd have to be honest with myself and pass.

thanks man! lot of work, time and money, but its rolling nicely now!

i'd agree that 12 inches is the breaking point, just remember they are long and slender when young

bambusa's have arrived! unfortunately Dorado attacked immediately, so i put them in my 125 gallon sump.... i'll either try beefing them up from there, or have my buddy keep them for a month or 2 and grow them out... kind of bummed, but with more size they should be fine.... their only about 1/2 the length of my Dorado, and are a much thinner fish, so i guess it was a fools hope to think i could introduce them immediatley..... either way they are a really neat fish, and i'm really looking forward to seeing them at monster size!

special thanks to Wes from Rare Fish for selling these guys

Dorados thrive on home field advantage...... They need to be added last cuase once they're comfy any attempts to add new fish usually end badly.

I have 2 around a foot. They em hate eachother. I can't keep them together, so theyre in seperate tanks. They're usually fine with other fish, but occasionally they cause problems. My remedy - swap them. As soon as they're removed from thier comfort zone they're passive again.

I'd highly recommend removing the Dorado for a while prior to reintroducing the Bambusa, then after they've settled in and are eating well then maybe try reintroducing Dorado, but I think if it's reintroduced last you'll have much better luck. :)

i couldnt agree with more DB, very sound advice ... in fact last night i grabbed the big net and brought it downstairs in preparation to do just that, and stick the dorado in with the 2 goonches, however 2 things stopped me..... firstly catching that damn fish would have been a nightmare!!!! (i can only imagine how much fun it is to catch one in a 750 gallon.... lol!) and on top of that my ATF's would have damaged themselves so badly in my attempts to catch Dorado i couldnt risk it. And secondly, i dont want to do anything that could put at risk the relationship my ATF's and Dorado have .... i can remember the first week of Dorado in with them, and it was scary to say the least, and having to reintroduce him in a month or 2 could change the equillibrium they seem to have.... I'm actually going to try the bambusa's again tonight, they each ate like 6 massivores last night and seem to be doing well, so maybe ... but chances are it wont work till they are bigger .... pretty sure they are big enough that he wont try and eat them, just bite and badger, which usually takes a little longer to kill, so i'm gonna try and watch very closely.... thanks again DB, and if it winds up not working you want a 3rd Dorado? lol!

I'd love a third!!! I knew when the rays got the 3rd one I'd be crazy lucky to have 2 get along, and beings I seem to be an extremely unlucky person I knew there was no way, and I was right.

One of my Dorado is actually in with some 4" Bala sharks right now and was fine for a few weeks, now I'm missing 2 of them. I actually thought it was the Dorado till I found a picked clean skeleton. I moved a lil black ray into the tank shortly after the Dorado. Pretty sure IF it was the Dorado there wouldn't have been a skeleton...... I actually tried the balas with the blackies and watched them pin one the first 5 minutes.

Keep me in mind if you do end up having to get rid of the Dodo..... :) Hopefully he plays nice and you get to enjoy it for years to come......
