Should the Washington Redskins change their team name?

I don't usually participate in conversations like this, given that I'm not particularly outspoken in regards to my political or social views, but I just felt a strange urge to mention an aspect of this that continuously bothers me: racial slurs in general. I suppose I have more of a question, than a comment.

I'm not sure of everyone else's interpretation, but to me it definitely feels like there is a hierarchy to racial slurs. There are some I can say in jest, and there are others that make me cringe when I hear them. Being predominantly caucasian in appearance, I'm very comfortable with most, if not all, "white-boy" slurs. The Iranian 1/2 of my blood also finds a decent amount of humor in some of the more thought out middle-eastern slurs, though many of them are in poor taste no matter how you look at them. I suppose I would be curious to hear from a Native American where "redskin" is on a scale of "hah!" to "*cringe*". Being raised outside DC most of my life, the term instantly brings to mind our Football team, and my brain doesn't even make the link to racial slur.

** side note - has anyone mentioned how we lost the "bullets" back in the 90's yet? Do other states have this many problems with the names of their sports teams?!? **

Someone did mention the old Bullets name situation already.

Doesn't bother me if they want to change it, but I've always viewed it more like they are representing for natives with the name, as opposed to bashing. We have lots of natives up here, and I've never heard anyone complain about the Red Skins, Chiefs, Indians, Blackhawks, Braves, etc. team names.

that's because the nicknames were intended to represent good fighters, not negative racial slurs. nobody would name their own team something demeaning, that would be counter-productive to the team's morale.

didn't read whole thread. but why would a team change names anyways?

does it help make a crappy team magically become less crappy?

So your way of thinking is that it only takes a very few, maybe only one to say they are offended by something and all should change. Considering how easily some people get offended don't you think that could quickly spiral out of control.

From the statement here it looks like you don't have the open mind. I read it as you have made up your mind on it and anyone who doesn't agree is wrong and has no say on the matter. Correct me on that if I'm wrong but that's how it reads.

No, but seeing as how few natives there are I'm not sure how many you want to be offended.....the other 99 percent of the population? History is full of people/cultures being oppressed because the majority wanted to stay status quo

My personal take comes from a similar but very different conversation that I'd rather not take this thread into.

PS, my boy Spartacus has a history of ignoring the questions I present and only answering what he wants. It wasn't meant for all of you. That's personal between me and him. Even if he makes me want to punch him in the face I'd still have a beer and watch football with him

Ya, that was pretty much my take on it.

no way they should change their name. would open the door for tons of other teams like chiefs, braves, blackhawks, etc
