Suggestions for an uncommon SA dwarf cichlid

I am torn between the Honduran red point Rio Danli from Jeff Rapps or getting some Pelvicachromis taeniatus 'Moliwe'. I love the coloration and contrast on the Pelvicachromis. I also love the coloration of the HRP. Blue is my favorite color and I know deep down that I want something with a bit of size in it, but won't get over 6" (which probably isn't really dwarf at that point). Space isn't an issue. I have a 20 high I thought I would start with, but also could do a 40 breeder if its a bigger species.

Does anyone have info on how good these fish are as parents? That may be the tie breaker for me. I want something I can leave the fry in for a few weeks to grow up with their parents a bit before removing them and don't want to have to worry about the parents turning homicidal in just 2-3 weeks. I also don't want to be overloaded with fry. I know the HRPs only have clutches of 50-75 eggs at a time, which is perfect if they can stay with their fry for 2-3 weeks. I would assume the Pelvicachromis is similar due just to body size. Anyone have info on the Pelvicachromis egg clutch sizes?

Pelivachromis will have smaller batches, but not by much. As far as parents, its really hard to beat Cryptoheros, I think they are the best parents of the fish I have kept. One reason they are among my favorite fish. Nothing wrong with HRP, but just know that they are not a fish you are going to move if you raise fry.

Pelvicachromis are by no means bad parents though. And you can probably leave the fry with parents longer.

For a 20 high, I would stick with the taeniatus. If your going with a 40 breeder, either will be fine.

Good points. :) I will stick with the Pelvicachromis.

I also got in touch with Ted. Unfortunately, he says he is on a "breeding hiatus", so won't be back to selling the taeniatus until fall. :(

There is a westie guy you can order from online, him and Ted are buddies. Jeff is a good guy, and closer to you than The Wet Spot on aquabid: http://aquaticclarity.com/

Sweet. Thanks for the link. I sent an email out to see what he can do for me. If he has a breeding pair for $35, I will jump on that. But if its just 2 cichlids for $35, I will pass. Seems a bit expensive if that is the case.

Pelvicachromis are usually sold as pairs, rarely proven pairs. You can also keep an eye on aquabid.

So before I carry out my krib breeding plans, are there any more suggestions for cichlids ranging from 2.5-4" that would be fairly easy to breed, but aren't super common (like rams)? Just don't want to commit to something and then find out a few days later that there were cichlids I liked more.

If that is the case, I think I will pass. $35 just for two seems pretty expensive when I know they sell on Aquabid in groups of four for $20-30. Plus if I have to wait, I will wait until Ted starts breeding again in a few months and get a group of six.

They usually average $40 on aquabid, so it's a decent price from what I've seen.

West Africans in general cost more. If you don't mind about the whole common, uncommon, thing, you could always spring for Pelvicachromis pulcher (common krib). I got some recently myself because they are so cheap and a fun spawn.
