The End All Red Tail Catfish debate thread!!!! :)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That 1" per gal rule is total rubbish if it was true I would be able to keep 1000" of fish in my tank

I would be over stocked if I had 400" in my tank

A red tail cat is way to big for about 99% of the people who buy them

Most people go out and impulse buy they then bring it home and then start researching on the web they then get flamed on forums and are told how big and how fast the little cat will get but they never seam to take notice or even believe its true

Until 3 months down the line then they get rid as fast as poss

Yes it's a shame this happens but it will carry on due to the cheap price and the way the cat looks as they are stunning and cute

If they was $500 each for baby's I think you would have less of a problem with impulse buys

I still say if you provide hiding spots fish will use them so you never get to see the fish
Its much better to see a fish laying on the substrate rather than laying behind or in a bit of drift wood

Too bad RTC is available as everyday there is.
How about for it's aggression? Due everyone really does like to have a community tank/pond, no matter if it's aggressive or predator we can't give off people who would want tankmates for a RTC. Suggestions pls... it would be rare for someone to do prepare things for a sole fish a whole pond/tank to a single fish. Unless it's priceless to them, like for an arowana, chanas or others, though it's rare someone surely does setups like this.
How to deal with algae on a RTC pond/tank? is it best to throw some chems, or is it ok for plecos, flagtails, or other algae eating crew to do the cleaning?

to get rid of green get a UV simple job done

I have seen Red Tails for sale at Petsmart ;O

I have always wanted one but not until I already have the set up. I will never do the "ill upgrade when the time comes"

I agree was annoying on my cell earlier. I will look when I am finished and see if there is any mention in the mods section. If not I will report it.

so new more shocking topic!!! So as you know many people buy this and other large catfish knowingly even though they cannot house it when it is larger properly. Another thread about paroon sharks brought something else into my mind. I know of several users on here that will get monster fish and when they reach a size that is too large for them to house they simply kill the fish and eat them. RTC are grown on farms in SA for food production as well as the hybrids and TSN also. So who would think that one alternative is to say hey I got this fish and when it reaches 2' and I can no longer house it properly he is gonna be dinner? Puts my mind set to cattle farmers. You know they get attached to their cattle, but when push comes to shove that hunk of beef is gonna be on the table. I know it's totally different, but both are raised for their meat just saying both are sorta temporary pets if this is the route you take.

Thoughts please?!? Let's continue to keep it clean though you guys and gals are doing awesome.

As long as the animal is treated well and not exposed to chemicals that are unsafe for animals intended for human consumption I have no problem with the practice of raising animals to eat, including fish.
Those fillets look delicious.
