Single Green Terror ok in a 75g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm currently cycling a 75. It's been up a little over a month with some danios. Levels are testing 0,0,0.
Running two aquaclear 110's for filtration.

I've thought about an Oscar, but I'm reading and hearing that's boarder line for one oscar.

What about a Green Terror? Can I house one green terror in a 75?

Yeah, one Green Terror could live in a 75 gallon aquarium, and even a spawning pair. I would be careful having two adult male Green Terrors in that size of aquarium because conflict would likely result; maybe not juveniles as much, but adults would likely have conflict. I do not think you could really effectively have a large adult Male Green Terror and other large New World cichlids because of issues with territory and environment such as filtration. If they was smaller maybe but not the same size as an adult Green Terror. The big question is maybe juveniles would work currently, but when they are adults would the aquarium be satisfactory or ideal?

You are perfectly OK to keep one GT plus a number of smaller cichlides in a 75 gal. I keep a single male with smaller Tanganyikans and Peacocks in a 75 gal for years and they get along well.

I do agree with this idea depending on the particular individual Green Terror's personality, although I would not necessarily say this is perfectly okay because many variables tend to exist. :)

I agree that different individuals will have different temperament, really for most cichlids I've kept. But tank raised GTs have pretty consistently been good citizens ime. Tankmates can make a difference, though; some might bring out more aggression than others. I've had GTs and severums get along well, even be buddies, but this is no doubt a depends on the individual fish situation.

75 gal tank no problem ime with overall stocking being rational for the tank. Also, may seem an odd combination, but I too have kept GT with haps and peacocks and the GT made a great tank boss, tending to break up fights between the Malawis, but otherwise didn't pay much attention to them.

Now, wild GTs are a whole other ballgame ime. Those I've had definitely deserved their name. :naughty:

As others have posted, a single or pair of GTs in a 75g would be just fine.

To end up with a stable pair, I'd recommend starting with 6 or so and letting them choose. Leave the pair in the 75g and find another home for the rest...

The most aggressive GTs that I've every kept...and I've kept and bred many, including wild ones over the years...have been orders of magnitude less aggressive/territorial than your average dovii, red devil, etc.

Matt

I heard mixed experiences with them very aggressive and very calm just depends on the fish

Ive got my A. Stalsbergi pair in a 90, Basic same footprint as a 75 but taller. 75's and 90's are perfect tanks for a pair (male/female) Green Terror's.
