What do you guys feed your cichlids??

JwHiser ........... I have fed most all brands of tropical fish foods over the years, and to this day still experiment with a number of commercial tropical foods. You don't know me, or anything about me, including what I have fed, and/or currently feed to any of my fish. I suggest in the future that you keep any/all personal comments about me to yourself, or bring some friends & pack a lunch. You'll be in for a long day. lol

I happen to promote and contribute to a LOT of things in this hobby, besides just feeding quality food. You might want to look up some of those past discussions, many of them have been made stickies.



With regards to this discussion, I will continue to stand by my previous comments, and those who feel that their fish can gain something that in their minds is nutritionally lacking in other premium brands, by feeding raw ingredients such as corn, soybeans, and poultry by-products, by all means feel free to do so. No one here is forcing you to do otherwise, or for that matter to even read any of these comments.

RD I do not want to know you, or anything about you and yes I know you think your the food guru, but, that doesn't give you the entitlement to just smash and or by cryptic about anyone else's food choice. I mean the title says "what do you feed YOUR cichlids" your as in whom ever is reading this thread, not just you! I have read several other of your post particularly the ones about food and you do the same thing every time bro. And I didn't state any of my personal comments, I stated (no verbatim of course) what you've said in this public forum many times before. Seriously, have you not noticed that once you get going on a thread it gets closed shortly after when it regards food? There are foods I think are worse than garbage, but on my food thread I didn't dog and call out that person for using one of those said foods! I also think that's awesome that you've been so successful and had stickies made here, that's awesome man congrats, would love to have a thread sticked! And lastly, I won't be needing a bunch of friends or a packed lunch, but I can bring you a Happy Meal if you'd like! I'd also love to hear what foods you feed, I'm sure we all would!

Agreed.

But I question the data and ingredient list on any food someone claims to be good. The " my fish look great" isn't quite enough for me personally. Not dogging your feed, just trying to see what's in it. It's something new that I was unaware of till it was mentioned here.

I do the same for my families personal diets and my dogs as well.

Well right now I've been using YFS (your fish stuff) foods. The ingredients are comparable to NLS and the food isn't mass produced like most companies, its made in house in smaller portions for freshness. It's the best food I've used in my almost 16 years and this was a switch form NLS. Now I'm not saying NLS is a bad food because its not, I just prefer and really enjoy the differences it makes not just with fish but, cleanliness in the tank, and filters. Southern delight looks awsome!

From what I've heard from two very respected hobbyist it is the best food they've used. Got my shipment of it today and can't wait to let my fish try it out. Got a sample for enough to give it a solid review so ill def make a thread telling about it when I run out.

I just looked at SD briefly and they looked to have good intentions. I didnt realize all that filler thats in it as RD stated. Why would any new company that targets serious hobbyist use fillers and by meal products?

If I could feed my fish one food only it would be NLS just because of its history and track record. Unfortunately my fish eat it but only untill they hit 4 to 5 inch then do not except it! Right now Northfin is the next best thing thats available to me.

I also like the idea of feeding a variety of foods. Feeding a variety of different foods seems to be the habbit of old school fish keepers and seems to work very well. RD do you feed a Variety or exclusive NLS?

Forgot to mention. I feed Northfin, omega one, massivore right now. Xtreme just became available is this food recommended?

I have a buddy using north fin fishman09 on here and he says he loves it. I've heard some good things about xtreme but not enough to suggest it. I can tell you I love YFS though lol.

Old school fish keepers (I'm 54 yrs old) fed a *wide variety* of foods due to the fact that years back there really weren't any high quality premium tropical fish foods on the market. Most of it was very low quality, loaded with low cost starch fillers - such as, flour, corn, soybean, etc. Food such as this:

Pretty much the same as dog kibble back in the day, except worse. You couldn't find a tropical fish food comprised of Antarctic krill, herring, squid, spirulina, etc - if your life depended on it. No such foods existed years ago. Most were the same, low quality generic fish meal (high ash) and a bunch of low cost fillers. Even the vitamin premixes were lower quality than today, some much lower. Undergravel filters were the rage, and many people simply topped their tanks off as the water evaporated. A 50% weekly water change would have been considered insane!

Vitamin C consisted of ascorbic acid, which begins to break down the moment one even looks at it. lol Much, much better foods over the past 20 yrs or so, and unlike in years past most of todays better quality foods can be fed as a nutritionally complete diet - just as dry dog food can.

How many people do you know that feed dry dog kibble? Lots I bet. How many of those people feed 10 different brands of dry dog food to their dog for *wide variety* purposes? None I bet.

You can, not saying that it's wrong, it isn't. It's just that unlike in the past one doesn't have to in order to successfully raise long lived healthy fish. Many hobbyists focus on a wide variety of brands, when what one should really be focussing on is feeding a wide variety of high quality raw ingredients, topped off with a high quality vitamin/mineral premix.


Personally I feed a *wide variety* of NLS formulas as my main staple, but I'm sure that comes as no surprise to most folks here. As previously stated, I also experiment with other food brands, and certain fish.

I feed my Oscar and pike cichlid gold, prawns, dried mill worms and live river shrimp. Used to give them blood worms too but then I got told cichlids shouldn't have them? Is this true?
