New tank build in progress

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I actually did some work on it today! I added a plastic liner on the 2x4 walls and then added a layer of plywood on top of that. I'll try and do some more tomorrow. I am going to add a tarp, a 30 mil pvc liner and then a 45 mil epdm liner. I am also going to work on making a background for the back and sides using stones etc and have crevices for the small fish to hide etc.

Final dimensions are 117" x 48" x 34"

I've been dealing with a few glass companies and they have been telling me how stronger tempered glass vs plate glass is. They said you can hit 3/8" tempered glass with a sledge hammer in the center and it wont break but if you do it with 1/2" plate glass it will shatter, even though 1/2" is thick they suggest going tempered and said 3/8" tempered is far stronger than 1/2" plate.

Anyone have any feedback???? I appreciate it!

It is stronger, but you can't drill it. If you don't need to drill I'd say go for it.

I don't need it drilled...it will be the exact size I need. I have been reading posts on here and the consensus seems to be not to use tempered because if it breaks it will shatter, instead of having pieces like regular plate glass. If that is the only reason, then I don't see why I shouldn't use it....?

i would go tempered for sure! When i bought my piece it was 270 long and 100 wide. I asked the guy on the shop if it could break in the middle if we lifted it 2 guys, 1 in each end, reasonable question since it was veeery heavy. The guy just loughed at me, he said you could take 2 pieces of wood, 1 in each end, lay the glass on them, and he could drive the biggest truck they had in the store over the middle of it, and it wouldnt break! That in mind, i would go tempered! Mine was 19mm thick.. But keep in mind, if you knock a corner, there is a possibility it goes in a million pieces.

Bingo.

Are you going to have any front-to-back braces to stop the 4x4 across the top edge from flexing? It might seem like a solid piece of wood but compared to glass (which barely flexes at all) it will bend quite considerably with that much weight behind it. 1/2" doesn't seem thick enough to me for a 30" high window, even if it is supported completely around the perimeter. 1/2" toughened on the other hand, would be more than enough. Basically toughened/tempered is around five times stronger than regular float glass. (Source.)

Yes, after the glass is in, I am going to brace it.

Eriik - I watched some videos on youtube of tempered glass strength....incredible!
