Need Urgent Help! Piranhas upside down!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im surprised you lost the other one after this much time if it was from lack oxygen after the problem had been fixed

Sent from my iPhone using MonsterAquariaNetwork app

You do have a point but what other possible explanation can there be?
That's why I asked if prolonged lack of oxygen causes permanent damage..

Thanks for the caution guess I will put my sand in boiling water.

AHA! I think I see the problem. if you live in a tropical region and with a heater your basically roasting your fish. depending on temps, I might even look into chillers

Well Yup but average room temperature here now is around 80°F. Which should be ideal for piranhas... So you saying lack of oxygen due to heat in the water was the killer?

No problem quarter!

Remember that rbp are pretty tough fish so keep in mind fluctuations and such with your new stock because they may not be so tolerant to changes like rbp.

And if o2 and temps were bad for long enough the sustained stress did other damage and in this case its not something that a bucket of water will solve. Again very sorry and cheers to your new stock!

Try a bubble stone or two or better yet just get a sponge filter, that way if your power goes out you can buy inexpensive battery powered air pumps, the SF will eventually retain beneficial bacteria so this will greatly improve survival during a power outage. Always need to have all bases covered!

You can get the heater controller, sf and air pumps for under 100$ w/ free s&h:

Just noticed something on my last one.. Half his bottom teeth were missing. What could the reason be? Do they shed teeth?

 btw how much dechlo do you put? And use the liquid one or the tablet one?

Buy seachem prime dechlor. IMO its the best on the market next to safe but that's powder. I think its a capful for every 50gals or so. If you buy the 2 liter its good for 20,000gallons of water. Do the math that will last forever. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4057

They do shed naturally but I'm sure in and out they may have freaked as baller said.

just curious, what was the actual temperature of your water when you noticed the water was a bit hot?

I had a raphael catfish that survived a heater malfunction, at the time my thermometer was reading 99F (that's as high as it'll go) and the water was VERY Warm, it's like a hot bath.

it can be few different things, high temperature, lack of oxygen due to the higher water temperature, or something in the water you added in, or can be the combination of everything.

Here is the picture...
And I don't remember the water temp cause my thermometer was spoilt but it was quite warm than normal.. Could be the temp when one showers but without steam obviously.

It's a very weird scenario. I never saw a fish with that kind of symptom due to the lack of oxygen. I wouldn't discard some other causes. Something related to the swim bladder or neurological causes will be a good guess in my opinion.
