7'x12' Plywood Build For My Rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Easier then you think. Trust me I have a back that is not the greatest the last thing I need is to end up in physical therapy again. I got this lol.

When you are ready fire away with any questions you may have.

Still undecided on what else I want to keep besides the group of silver dollars I currently have. I will figure that out when the time comes. I have had bass, silver arowana, loaches, and silver dollars all together but may do something different.

For decor I am going to make some tree stumps that I plan to incorporate a couple over the edge style bottom drains. Never ran these types of drains so we shall see how they work out. I have done a ton of research on this type of drain and have put more thought into them then the actual build itself. I could have built a traditional bottom drain into the tank but choose not to with how difficult it would be to service them if there was an issue.

For filtration I have several ways I can go. I was thinking a basic sump setup with several chambers keeping it simple. Large filter pads I can order in bulk with a ton of ceramic rings. Or I can always run the Ultima II I have or the bio reactor I still have. Either way I think I am going to run a sump with one of the other pieces added.

The kid is doing great thanks for asking.

Ya i agree about the bottom drain. I will also go with a sump filter and 1st stage mechanical filter floss and engineered foam, 2nd stage bio with K1 in fluid bed and maybe reactors after. Can wait. You're teasing me with your progress. Lol

If you have a fluidized bed of k1 or other media you dont need a reactor as you have made a reactor in sump.

Ya i should have elaborated. I meant a chemical reactor or something of that sort. Thats what I've got now and its impeccable. As is I've got mechanical, bio like mad, chemical, uv. By chemical i mean that i use Pura complete in a phosban reactor for smell, clarity etc.

Dude this looks soo good! I've never seen a plywood build before.

All the credit goes to JohnG and VLdesign on here. And probably others they followed on their builds. Do a google search for JohnG 1400 gallon plywood tank and VLdesign 2700 gallon tank with monsterfishkeepers after it and enjoy the read. Building them this way is taking it to the extreme but with how rigid it is why not lol.

Ever looked into building some radial flow separators for 1st stage mechanical? I decided to try a couple, and there's seriously something to this design. I had my doubts, but I'm sure with a little fine tuning they could yield some amazing results....

Sure have. It may be something I add into the system once I get things going. If I have time I am going to give my bottom drain thoughts a try on my stock tanks this weekend. I have only seen this setup one other time. I have no clue if it will even work but who knows.
Do you have pictures of your separators in your filtration thread?
