So you are being mean to punish pole for his perceived transgressions? Im also 100% sure that kids do things their parents aren't aware of, I know I did, so the 'not allowing' is moot. This is a family site, so 'the world is harsh' cannot apply. Just as we cannot swear or discuss 'adult' topics, we cannot look at everything from an adult viewpoint.

To get back on subject, I will post tank stock, which is four bettas( one male three females) a yoyo loach( growout) a bn plec( will move if necessary) one neon tetra( survivor from a diseased batch) two glass cats, and a male sailfin balloon molly. Tank is heavily filtered and soon to be much more heavily planted.

I like the 1st pic than the 2nd one..its good for u to try out any material u had in mind but make sure tht it is related to what theme ur planning on ur tank..its ur tank anyway, ur free to try any scape u want..:)

But regarding the substrate i'm with sharizan, and personally preferred the look of the red sand > the white gravel...

Although i've also always tried to avoid using white substrates or grave...

pole your 12???? If so, you handle your business pretty maturely. And its nice to see such a young hobbyist not only getting out there and learning new things, but sharing your tanks with others.

Honestly i liked the red gravel better also. It looked cool contrasting the blue betta. But have you thought of adding some neon tetras to the mix?

also, if your having trouble with the plants not staying anchored down, as i see some floating in the second pic. Try putting some dirt under your gravel. This will cause the plants to root down much faster and supply much needed nutrients which will make your plants much greener and healthier.

You should check out dirty dustins planted tanks on youtube, he has a lot of info on planted tanks.

I think the tank will look better when the water clears up a little more. How do 3 bettas do in the small of a space? Never really tried anything like it personally.

Back on subject, normally I don't like non natural colored gravel or sand but of the 2 pictures I actually prefer the red substrate, it went well with the rest of the tank and the inhabitant.

The white as is looks a little too fake, have you thought about just adding/mixing in a small amount of darker gravel into it?

As far as plants as earlier discussed in the thread; I'm a huge fan of just some really basic, low light Amazon swords as well as a few shorter growing "foreground" plants like Hygrophila for ground cover.
