So what's the deal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
humm, may try that. most sites its a link thing.

Yeah,I have problems posting photos onto the car forum I'm a member of.It seems to have a different and less user friendly system than that of MFK's system.

Yeah I wasn't aware that some posters had done that but it makes no sense to do so.Thats about as bad as someone openly complaining that no one replies to his or her thread and asks for it to be deleted, kind of childish....I enjoyed Mo's "Today in the Fishroom" offerings even though I'm not into the types of fish that he keeps and like Spoiler said, hopefully he's just been busy.

+1, ill usually comment on a good pic but most of the good pics get just that, hey man great job on X fish, great pic!

Now if 5 or 6 of those responses doesnt do it for ya and you feel the need to "have them deleted" then thats petty, people still look at them and appreciate them, just because they dont post on it doesnt mean people dont like it

My sediment exactly.

Here's a pic of a fish, praise me!!!
Kidding, I think there are a few things at play.

Posts that give the impression that the poster is lacking experience or knowledge get a great deal of response. Posts that give the impression the poster is competent get less response because it appears there's not a lot for others to contribute.

Posts asking questions often get more responses than posts that don't.

Posts that imply more to come in the near future often get more response than posts that don't.

Posts relating to a subject that's trendy get more response than less trendy subjects.

Folks don't see "great pics" as enough of a contribution to warrant a post.

And I'd guess there are other factors as well.
Posters giving the impression of lacking knowledge maybe a factor perhaps members see a less experienced person and automatically want to offer advice, which is a good thing. Still it would be nice if that sentiment included the whole community as even an experienced member can use support from time to time.

I agree that's sometimes the case but usually only in the guess what's in the box/bag threads, still it's something I may apply to my threads in the near future to see if it makes a difference.

I definitely agree with that but I do notice that even trendy subjects(fish) get over looked for some reason in the Photo Lounge with the exception of PBass pics who always seem to garnish replies.

If that's true it's sad that people don't think good pics are worth contributing a post to as I said it's the great pics that help in id's and help further the knowledge of the hobby by helping to discern between similar looking fish. Also since a major consideration for some people is the looks of the fish, it's often the great pic that helps inspire you to buy that unassuming juvenile because you already have seen what great potential he/she has.

because this is first & foremost, a fish keeping forum. Subforum subjects about other skills are of most interest to photo hobbyists.
Fish keepers are primarily here to expand their knowledge in this subject. Crappy cell pics are usually posted with a discussion theme and learning questions, not for the pictures' sake.
I think fishkeepers appreciate good photos (IF they see them) whether saying so or not, but their focus is on the fish related purpose of images.
Photographers who want an interactive photo-based section need to create discussions there. The forum isn't an art show.
It is petulant for a photog to get their attachments removed. It's very annoying to discover a thread and begin reading with interest, only to find the relevant pics deleted.

Aquamojo had great responses about his cichlid-related photo illustrations, so IMO you are quite mistaken about that.
I assume he is just quite busy.
That's not a good point when you consider the lounge is one of the most frequently visited and posted in sections on this forum, so why does the photo lounge get so little attention?

Also as I said properly id'ing a fish is a large portion of the hobby(just look at the tons of the id threads out there) so being able to clearly see all the nuances to differentiate between similar lookingfish(Armatus/ Tats/ ATF's/ Goonch) doesn't help to further a members knowledge? Considering the fact that size and temperament of a fish play a large role in considering stock and the only way to verify a fish id to most hobbyists is sight you don't think a good pic helps in that respect?

As far as the cell pics being posted with a theme, I am talking about cell phone pics being posted in the same section(Photo Lounge) with no subject other then the pic getting more responses, the only reason that makes sense to me so far is what houie925 suggested. That perhaps people see the fuzzy cell phone pics(I try not to refer to anyone's effort as crappy though I do falter from time to time) and assume the poster is inexperienced and try to help or make sure the poster is prepared for the future requirements of the posted fish.

Others have suggested adding a discussion or some further interaction as you have and I think it's definitely something to consider and will apply this day forward. Perhaps more outward engagement will garner an increase inward from fellow members. As far as people being petulant in asking for the removal of their images, I had stated the same thing in my original post(I used petty not petulant) so no disagreement there.

As afar as Mo again I repeat I do not know why he's on here less but I do know he doesn't get many responses. He has been averaging 11-20 responses and he makes up at least 3 of them answering a question out of a lot of times 500-700 views. Now as a Mod I can see how many where members and how many where guests that viewed a thread and can even see if they've visited the thread more than once. Which means they appreciate or like the pics but just won't take the time or effort to comment. Is it really so much of a inconvenience to say something nice to someone whose put forth an image you enjoy?

See that people? 7 posts for one single pic just from 1 member. lol

That's great, point taken.

Now, not to hijack the thread: Answer the questions, I want to know and probably others:

Is the tank plywood?
What kind of sealant?
What do you feed a monster like that ("monster" in a compliment kind of way)?
What other fish, if any, do you keep with it?

@ All posters including OP: Great pics, I've had fun in this thread, thanks for sharing.

Plywood tank 4x8x2' sealed with max ACR which is an epoxy resin, glass window held in place with GE silicone 1. Drip system handles water changes and diy heat exchanger keeps it warm. Cat's about 18" currently and eats pellet stuffed fish for two feedings, whatever's cheap and looks good at the asian market, and pellet stuffed shrimp the next feeding. Tankmates O. Niger, SA red tail cat, hybrid TSNxRTC. I think that was everything.

Pics of cats and tank build are in my sig
