Looking for a little SA aggression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i know they are common but...so many cichlids are interesting to watch and keep.firemouths would be able to breed and stay in the 75 for life.you could probably get some big swordtails as dithers for an active tank.

Firemouths would work well as mentioned , also you could try
Convicts
Salvini
Kribensis
Rams
Just a few ideas for thought I've bred all of the above in 75's or smaller over the years they all work well my favourite would have to be the kribs stunning colours even more so as a breeding pair

If you're looking for something different than community SA, try a pair of sveni pikes from Rapps. they don't get too big and would really be a unique experience. Or even a single, mixed with the right dithers.
Of course, I'm being tempted to try a pike or 2 myself ;)

I swear good pictures of pikes are doctored. Regani picture with the amazing blue, black and yellow, marmorata with beautiful blue and black spots, saxatilis with brilliant blue fins....then I watch videos of them and they seem so dull. :(

You're asking for a unicorn. Festae are the SA kings of aggression however are too big pair wise to fit in your tank. You need to consider CA's. If you want something nasty & not a lot of people have I would consider grammodes. They grow painfully slow though.

What about a carpintis? I've never seen one over 10". Pretty aggressive & look great. I don't think your on the toothy having to have a divider handy level yet.

Yeah, I have come to realize that. My gf loves the look of salvini, so I think I may end up with a pair of them plus a couple target convicts.

I do like the look of some of the Texas variants. Unfortunately they would probably be a tad big for the 75 and you are right that I am probably not ready for too much aggression too quickly since I have only kept peaceful species (even though they get big and can be moody, I consider severum to be peaceful LOL).

And as much as I love the body shape of pikes, I can't seem to find one that is colorful enough for me. Pictures make them look amazing, but I'm convinced the pictures are tampered with a little. All the YouTube videos I have watched of several different species reveals some purple hues and black lines/dots, but for the most part all the pikes are dull looking.

I'd be careful with the target convict idea. If you do go that route use all females. Male cons can be bullies and salvini aren't much bigger that the con itself

I know many CA cichlids can cross breed and I am not sure if Salvini and cons can. If I wanted to add a target fish or two, would I do better with 1-2 other cichlids or a group of fast moving fish like giant danios? If it's better to have 1-2 target cichlids, what would you recommend?

I'm pretty sure convicts can cross bred with cats and dogs. IME the aggression of salvinis is much stronger than that of convicts. I think a couple cons will be fine.
