short body genes?

Cool little guys.
I culled sb tex with even jagged lateral lines, trying to keep the sb but with no other know deformity. Ive seen so many bad sb for sale. Messed up mouths, folded or deformed fins, fish swimming with an up and down motion of tail instead of side to side.

Thanks. Yeah I was going to ask what did you cull or see within your spawns but wasn't sure I would get an answer. Lol That is very interesting to say the least. None of these had them issues that you have seen for sale or I would have culled quick. I try not to raise deformed/ugly fish but I had to give these guys a shot.

I tried to save a zig zag looking one from silk x kkp but he didnt make it. The worst ive seen in an lfs were "jellybean" cons. Most had folded fins and you could see uneveness beneath their flesh when lookig straight at them. I wanted to grab an oscar or something from a few tanks down and drop it in with them to put them out of their misery lol. I havent seen much deformity in my spawns but after seeing whats out there I prefer not to take any chances. Alot of these deformities can be spotted when they are small but just get worse as the fish grows.

Thanks for shedding more light. Knowledge of what made the hybrid sb and how it turned out made me start on my texas pair. I always wanted a sb texas and never seen one in the store nor have I ordered before. So when I bred I looked for them and found plenty... I would have never thought of keeping the odd pattern if it wasn't for the hybrid. The round(ball shaped) guy has more filling out to do towards his back end but we'll see what happens. Here's the 3 month update vid... http://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&persist_app=1&v=zpQ_-4dp3EI

Nice. They look good and fat. You know you have good sb when they dart around the tank attacking each other with just as much enthusiasm as normal tex do. lol

How are SB fry's spines supposed to look? I thought they were supposed to be curved/wavy like Crush's fry?

Curved. I have not dissected one myself. As small fry you can see their spines though.

Lol Gutted beat me to the punch. I was going to ask the same thing because the more I look at yours(the one your breeding back to the Thai gt) it seems like it just has the upper half of the body and then a tail lol. But as you can see with mine their lower body is scrunched together and then there is a tail. So mine will fill out with time or it will look completely different than yours... But either way I'll consider mine a first generation short body(in which I will breed if he/she turns out good). But I am also very curious to what a quality short body like yours looks like as fry. My whole reasoning for it being ok to raise the zig zag fry was because the short body form is a mutation and mutations start at birth.
