The cause of this is most likely a direct bite\suck to the eye from another ray, the addition of salt asap will ensure there is no infection takes place.

Bet its improved further overnight?

Hi Richard

Had a quick look this morning before leaving for work. Hard to rell with lights out but there was still evidence of damage. Hard to tell for sure. I will keep a very close eye on him (excuse the pun). What kind of salt do you use Richard and in what quantities per gallon?
Many thanks for your help on this. You have put a worrying old fishkeeper at peace!!

My Leo had very similar issue, used pure rock salt and it was cleared up in a week or so. Never stopped eating and behaved normal the whole time.

Hi Jim,

I use either pond salt or cooking salt. This should be used at a rate of 1\2 Oz per gallon of aquarium water, at this rate it is very effective, cut back on your usual feeding whilst treating, the salt can in some cases knock the bio filter back slightly so by not feeding quite so heavily helps to keep a nice balance. A good tip is to use half the dose the first day and the other half the second, again reduces the chance of upsetting the filter by using this method.
Make sure the salt is fully dissolved before adding to the aquarium Jim, you can put the salt in a pillow case and hang it in the tank somehow near the flow and let it naturally disperse. Salt unlike chemicals will not break down so will stay in the tank at full strength until such times you do a water change, 5 to 7 days should see significant improvement.

Note
When you weigh this out it will look an awful lot of salt....always does! but at this strength its perfectly safe for all the other fish also.

Thanks Richard. When you say cooking salt do you mean the sort of salt you would ad to water when boiling vegetables etc. I guess you don't mean rock salt? Many thanks

Yes that's the Salt, used it for years, rock salt is fine also.

Thanks mate will get on it tonight. When you say make sure it is fully disolved first, how do you do this, in boiling water? Or can i add it to the pillow case or something undisolved and let it disolve naturally? Should i stop water changes as well then for the duration of the treatment? At the moment i do two 3 hour water changes a day with the auto drip system.
I just worked this out (hope i done it right) I used the calculator on this site but i assume this shows US gallons. I have a 9x4x2 tank and 6x2.5x1.5 sump. Total water volume around 600 UK gallons. This equates to 600x0.5 = 300oz of salt. This converts to 8kg of salt! Thats an awful lot of salt! Have i got this correct?

I wouldn't use salt with Iodine.
It'll say it on the package.

Usually 1 lb per 100 gals.

That's works out to 2.7kg of salt. I'm kinda confused. Am I working out the dosage correctly? 2.7kg or 8kg. Its a big difference.

8.5 kg is what I work that out at Jim.....lets be conservative and hit it with 7.5...it will work at that.
Let it disperse naturally through a pillow case, don't forget, reduce or even stop feeding for a few days, that way the N03 etc will not change a great deal whilst the drip is off.
