how to identify liquid kok from hard kok?????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It all starts with genetics. Come on guys you all know that flowerhorns are bred for specific traits. Kok is one of those, you can get a good idea by looking at the parents.

It also has to do with hormones in the fish. For example if you introduce a mirror to the fhs tank he will become agressive and perc up releasing some type of hormone making his kok grow. Another example is when u introduce a female.
I'm not too sure on foods that have hormones as I'm totally against that.
Hope u get the idea now

What do you say about a fh with superior genetics but is kept in inferior conditions? Daniel's main argument is that genetics will work even if it the fish are kept in poor conditions.

Thank you, this mirror trick has been done for as long fh's have been around. The introduction of blood parrots to have a fh dominate increases the kok size and it has been proven many times. It will not make the kok smaller unless your fh is a puss and gets beat up

Thanks for adding that lol, that is also true.
As you guys can see there are many factors that effect a fhs kok.
Stable environment and water chemistry also..

....Soon enough when u have experience with fhs you will know what type of kok ur fh has.

The mirror play is to simulate the fighting for dominance and it does stimulate head growth. Nothing to do with water quality etc. Its part of the grooming I mentioned earlier.

A fh with superior genetics; I'm assuming u mean this beautiful fish with amazing color and or pearls , fins all.
Well that fish is going to die in piss poor water conditions because its parents have been interbreed/crossed bred so much that his genetics are going to be so out of wack that it will get sick at the slightest sight of poor water.

Fhs need to be kept in pristine water .

so whoever is saying that fhs will flourish in bad water is obviously new to fish keeping

So you agree, that without pristine conditions, a fh with superior genes will not show those wonderful gene.

Lots of bad and false info given out in this hybrid forum lately. Seems like you need to do some research. Like why and when a pure species male cichlid grows a nuchal hump. That is where our fh come from.
Maybe you want mfk hybrid section to be full of fantasy and misinformation but I dont.

That's funny, considering the fact that your water kok info in this discussion is totally incorrect.

It's called a WATER kok, because "WATER" koks mostly consist of WATER.

As far as why & when a pure species male cichlid grows a nuchal hump, might I suggest that a few of you read the following past discussion.

If the nuchal hump of a fish was primarily made up of fat, it would be impossible for that hump to increase, or decrease, overnight. Think about it. Massive water koks seen in some FH are no different than the massive nuchal humps seen in some Midas (A. citrinellus) - these massive humps are gonad dependent and created by systemic WATER retention, not from protein, and not from fat.

On the other hand, a "hard kok" would mostly consist of tissue, and fat, such as shown in the pic posted previously of the FH with its nuchal hump sliced open.

Thanks for clearing it up RD. I do have one question though. Of the solid material that make up the kok is it mostly fat or protein.

I always thought the tissue itself inside was mostly consisting of fat. What about the cheeks that come with massive water kok?
