Best intentions only go so far and down here in FL. we have a large number of fish (native and non) released into our waterways by irresponsible hobbyists who buy Dovii thinking the huge 125 they bought will suffice......
Most non-native species in FL are not a result of aquarium releases, but simply an escapee from fish farms during hurricanes. Sure few individual fishes may be someone's pet but the rest are just escapees.

there's no real way to know one way or the other.
I find it hard to believe with all the fish keepers in florida only one or two of them ended up with a tank full of baby convicts, and after finding out they had nowhere to put them and no-one who wanted them dumped them in a local canal.

I really hate the sappy approach, but realistically it's not MUCH different from the advice given here.

A lot of people find the concept of giving a goldfish more than a bowl ridiculous. We go on and on about proper housing and care, and possibly most in the hobby think we are nuts. We've all seen the threads that start with an Oscar in a 10 gallon, and the community erupts. I don't agree with most of PETA's policies, but I don't think their original intent was much different from that of MFK.

Keep all harmful chemicals away from the aquarium. Cigarette smoke, paint fumes, and aerosol sprays can be toxic if they are absorbed into the water.

Here is something I never thought about. I have an air pump system with multiple sponge filters in all my tanks. I am an avid smoker and sm0ker and have been for years. I wonder how much of the smoke affect my tank waters. ;-/

Unfortunately, Florida is full of fish farms, that is where the majority of our tropical fish comes from. There's no denying this fact and it's already proven that majority of non-native fishes in Florida came from the fish farms.

As long as you use filters, it's safe

We've already discussed this. Fx5's, 2262's and NLS are the only way to justify keeping fish, even in soy sauce packets!

Just from having been in the business for a number of years before and talking to so many part time keepers, I'm going with that a fair number of invasive fish species can be attributed to release and not farm accidents.

Davis I really hope you are joking that PETA started out like MFK. Ingrid Newkirk started and still runs PETA they were nuts from day one. What else do call a group that would shoot cattle in a pasture because they are better dead than owned. PETA is against animal ownership and believe people and animals are equal. When will you guys siding with PETA and the HSUS and any other one of these groups wake up and smell the coffee. There members and followers believe if a kitten and baby were drowning you save the kitten first. Wow what a wonderful bunch where can I sign up to join them!!!!
