Close Call and Trouble With Hystrix (Recommendations Accepted)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would double dose the prazi if u didnt already. When my big girl had gill flukes she was only breathing from one lung while the other looked collapsed/deflated so it was easy to determine flukes. Third day of dd prazi and she was back to 100%. Must dose twice though to catch the flukes as they exit their cysts. Hopefully it was flukes and not heart issues. The fact that she is still kicking is a good sign

Thanks. So do you double dis everyday without water changes? Prazi calls for dosing every three to five days. Can you and DB suggest a regiment for me based on your experience (including water changes) please?

This is how I did it. Start with wc and remove any carbon. Double dose prazi and do nothing for 5 days. Wc, double dose, do nothing for 6 days. Wc, double dose, do nothing for 7 days. Wc and done. This may be overkill or not exactly right but prazi is fairly safe so I figure better safe then sorry. It takes lots of prazi so I would order a big bottle off the internet.

I ran one on my 300 before I sold it. But no, I currently am not running one. Good suggestion. Thanks.

Thanks. Did your ray ever eat during this time? The hystrix is just about skin and bones at this point...which is crazy because three days ago, she ate 6 night crawlers and some tilapia.

She didn't eat for the first few days. Try chopped Canadian crawlers. Other than blackworms, they seem to be the preferred worm for my rays. Sometimes my male won't eat the Europeans so I dangle a Canadian over the Europeans and he smashes them. Damn picky retics lol

i didnt read the whole thread but at the begening you said you changed the subrastrate before the ray spazzed out. i would isolate the ray and remove the substrate or make it the same as what it was.

it could be just that the ray wasnt used to the new substrate stopped eating spazzed out then owner noticed and started changing things and the ray reacted tot the changes as well.

go back to basicas and give the ray time to settle down.
good luck

DB, will they do autopsies in Ames?

Not sure. I got sick of being handed off person to person trying to reach anyone that would actually give me any kind of answer. I gave up with them. The university I send to is in Mississippi I believe. Was referred to them by several of the respected ray gurus here.

The ray I sent in didn't cough, breath out of one lung or anything, just labored breathing. Gill Flukes was the last thing on my mind, but they were there.

Try some live blackworms, I have never seen a ray (or healthy fish for that matter) refuse blackworms. The only one that did, died the next day. I've had fish refuse everything, then reluctantly take blackworms.
