I bought this guy today... he is about 2.5". He was sold to me as a "Marbled Catfish"... I know a few go by this common name, but can anyone tell the scientific name or at least give me a few educated guesses?? The guy at the lfs did not know the scientific name, but said he took one home and it is close to 8 or 9" as of today... not exactly sure when he got it, but some time this past winter. He said they were about the same size when he took his home. Thanks!!

No your right they seem a bit different I don't know much on catfish but do they have anymore? Might pick one up if you got it from the fish place

I figured it out... Leiarus Marmoratus or Marbled Achara Catfish. Get to around 25-30". Same as the adult I had years ago (above). When I first bought the larger one above years ago it was sold to me as a Perruno, but I've been told (I looked it up too) that Marmoratus was much more common and that the difference was in the amount of dorsal rays... 8 or 9 for Perruno and 10 or 11 for Marmoratus. I had then and have now another Marmoratus.

I picked this guy up from a place here in Niagara Falls... not from the Fish Place. Oh, this was the only one they had... sorry. I seen him in there for the first time maybe two months ago, but didn't buy it... had to get him this time!!

Nice! Yeah I've been interested in these guys especially since they aren't a typical cat like tsn that'll try to eat everything haha been keeping an eye out for em, where at in the falls? I go out there to visit friends sometimes didn't know there were any LFS up there worth a visit

Both are the same family of cat...Marmoratus...their patterns change throughout their lifetime. Also sold as "marble achara" quite commonly.

Rainbow Tropical and it's not really worth the trip, but every once in a while they get something good. I traded in two of my Amphilophus Amarillo's... they are around 4" and from Cichlids of the Americas along with a Melenurus too... prolly 2.5". If you go there at least you know where they came from... if you decode to get a cichlid that is...
