Well.... I just came home from work to find him ripped to pieces. I'm so f...ing mad right now!!! Idk who did it or even see this coming. I put him in the tank last night n he looked fine at 6am before I left... except his tail was a tiny bit nipped/frayed somewhat, but nothing too bad. There are some 2.5-5" cichlids in there along with a 6" white catfish n 4.5" vulture catfish. Not much left of him at all.... ugh!!! He was roughly the same size of my vulture cat when I put him on 6 weeks ago or so. I really liked this guy...... this sucks.
Just thought I'd update... I ended up getting another marble achara today.... same size.... about 3"... from the fish place.... watched my cichlids very closely n found out it was the trimac... 3" only too!! The fish, within 30 mins, shredded its tail n ripped half the dorsal off while I cooked dinner. I came back n caught the tail end of it. The tank is now divided, 70/30, I hope the marble cat doesn't have any lingering issues n I can get him nice n big!!!
Vultures are equipped so indeed but from all we know, this has never been reported to happen by our regular gang here - anyone know different? It appears every vulture owner is caught by surprise themselves by their vulture's good behavior.
And it would have happened at night - strong catfish aggression (of any kind - predatory, hierarchal, territorial) mostly, if not almost always, happens at night (unless fighting for the same hidey-hole). The fact that it happened during the day points at the cichlids who rely on eye sight for their activity of any kind.
