Paroons...??? What are these?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
dorsal fin and degree of pigmentation look abit weird to be a paroon shark , paroons are usually darker and have more pointy dorsals . fins are too pointed to be iridescent shark .look much closer to a paroon than to an iridescent , maybe a different morth from the usual paroom . the fish swimming behavior and activity look very much paroon too

Good call on the unusual dorsal and fin shapes, perhaps they are P.bocourti or larnaudi.

dunno about these species , need to research , seem very unlikely that any wild pangasid catfish are sold in large amout , very uniform size and colour though. Most of the ones in the aquarium trade come from food farms .

Yeah,I get a kick out of people's reactions when I tell them that their newly discovered basa or swai that they love to eat is actually irridecsent shark that are sometimes kept in aquariums.

ya many aquarist do not have a real interest for fishes like commercial fishes , fish habitats , fishing etc . btw iridescent shark like most farm raised fishes do not taste good , their rapid growth rate must make them a good aquaculture fish though

I went back to the store and even though the man said Paroon, they were actually labeled Black Ear Sharks by his wife who wasn't there but generally knows more about the fish.

I could kinda see why they're labeled as Pangasius larnaudi with the fins and all, but I don't see the humeral spot that distinguishes that species. They seem to more have the stripes of Pangasiodon hypophthalmus. If they're black ears, they'll have a distinct spot right avove the pectoral fin on either side. I don't see them in the video; are they present in person?

Ok, I took a bunch of pics of the catfish in question. I hope these pics are good enough to identify the little guy. Thanks in advance...
