There are certain types of fish I buy because they look cool, but then I get them in my tank and their personality is no good and I end up getting tired of them. For me, it's the three P's: plecos, peacock bass, and polypterus.

They all look very cool and colorful (especially plecos) but the plecos and polys I've had only hide and they're tough to feed in a big community tank. All the pbass I've owned would chase all my other fish around so I get tired of them. I'll just stick with SA Cichlids and Dats.

Thanks. It's just that he isn't as brightly colored as when he was about 4-5". I've heard that about syns though.

Im with you man. I got a sign thats about 11in now. When I first got at 5 in, it was alot more brightly colored. The main problem is now its very dark and has more blue colors. Very little yellow and almost no reds :( Hoping it may brighten up some how lol

Yup that is exactly it. Some cichlids seem to have better color when younger, but some get better.

Metynnis fasciatus (striped silver dollars) cool fish very active but man they are gluttonous I dont understand how a fish so skinny could eat so much over feeding the tank is getting g annoying. Not getting rid of them but starting to really not like these guys

Odd balls and novelty fish are not my thing, my attention almost always gravitates towards central American and Madagascan cichlids.
And I often have the opposite experience, and will pick up fish at auctions as they become available, or just because I have never had them before, and find they exceed my expectations.
An example........... I have always been partial to cichlids of the genus Astatheros, but the A. longimanus I had seen in LFSs and photos seemed wimpy, and less than interesting.
Yet in a box swap with the Capital Cichlid club I ended up with some A. longimanus Lake Nicaragua, and the opposite of my previous expectations have been the result.
They started as 1/2" fry, and in a very short time, have grown into confident, robust, and colorful (for their age) young cichlids.

As much a fan of them as I am I have always been a little disappointed in Hepsetus Odoe.I have heard many others who've kept them claim that they were bold and outgoing but mine have always been shy and skittish.

Silver/Black Arowana, Hepsetus Odoe, Armatus, GATF/TATF, Red Tail Barracuda...I kept those for over a year and they are still shy and extremely skittish also due to thier tank requirement setup (mostly just bare tank with or without subtrace) It's boring to me and disappointed with thier skittish behave). I sold them all and re-setup my biotope Exodon tank and I never look back :P
