Ever buy a fish you were disappointed with?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Many of you are describing the fish`s natural behavior. If your fish are skittish they are lacking security. Catfish are for the most part nocturnal, therefore lay about or hide all day. How can you expect them to behave differently? Fish croaking after a couple of months is another thing altogether. Sometimes we loss fish and try as we might we can`t figure out why. The fact is though there is a reason, we just missed it.

I am not trolling here. That`s just how I see it.

Youtube videos are good at (unintentionally) deceiving people to think a fishes natural behavior is different than it actually is. For instance I watched hours and hours of fahaka videos. Now I go back and notice all those active fahakas are being fed. I also see plenty of gold nugget plecos on youtube it wasn't until I asked a question on MFK that made me realize that they might be one of those fish that hides all the time. Turns out some fish just have boring natural behaviors. Well boring in my opinion.

Silver dollars are the most skittish fish I've ever had. They look nice, especially the widebar ones, but you walk up to the tank a little too fast and all 5 of them will bash their faces into the glass. That's why many of them have damage to their faces, cuz they're so dumb and scared of their owners that they'll pound their own faces into the glass.

My issue with the silver dollars isnt so much skittishness but oh my god they eat like little oscars....cant stand having to over feed because of them

The Armatus for me. They looks to sinister to be so skiddish and get spooked so quick. And once they get spooked they go belly up no matter how big they are.

They are pigs lol. Mine were really skittish. I pretty much stay away from most characins because they do tend to be on the skittish side. Don/t get me wrong, I love them. The only tetras I have had that aren't skittish are astyanax sp. They are pretty bold and will eat right out of your hand. This is why I think they make the perfect dither or tank mates for cichlids.

I beg to differ mine would charge at the glass furiously everytime I walked in and my 15 inch red belly pacu is more skiddish lol. It was only in the beginning that they are skiddish. If you have it for long enough, they become outgoing and fun. One of the best fish out there lol at least in my opinion.

I bought some pike several years back. It never ate feeders, never ate pellets, hid all day. I waited for 4-5 weeks and the sucker died.

If I ever go back to Pikes, I'm purchasing one pike species only, Crenicichla cobra

I got picked up some 5 "red tiger motaguense" because I had wanted some for so long. I put them in my grow out with some "real" gems I had found: myersi, pearsei, umbee, true red terror and a few others. The motas grow up and end up killing all the mentioned stock leaving only minimal survivors. After growing a little more they end up being something that's not a red mota and I lose cichlid that will take forever to get again. Here is the spawn of satan.

For me it was a group of mettynis fasciatus (tiger silver dollars) I would have been fine with the normal skittish behavior but these things were the opposite ! Not skittish at all and ate everthying I put in the tank I mean it was like having a group of oscars. They took beating from other fish While they were eating and didnt give a crap.....hate thise damn things

If I buy fish, I get 4-6 and grow them out. I keep the best ones, rehome the ones that don't grow, don't look right in the fins or body shape, etc. I do this all the time. I just rehomed a Jag and a Jack Dempsey today. They don't look good when they hit 6 inches, they have drab colors, or they just don't get along with the fish in my tank I REALLY like (Syn, Breidhori, Argentea, Fenestratus), they gotta go. Keep in mind, though--I've had tanks for about a year or two now, so there's lots of fish I haven't had before--i'm still trying species out.

Same as me feels like a revolving door of fish finally think I have the right mix in the main tank
