Argentine "big head" brassy dorado

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was over at Wes' house and he had like 100 of these all in one tank and they were schooling together like a pack of tuna- looked really neat.
By far one of my favorite fish but if they don't like another fish in the tank, which is most all of them lol, they will eventually kill them.
The only time I have seen them successfully with other fish is to have a load of tank mates and dithers so to keep their little evil brain too occupied by all the commotion.

Yeah my old fransiscanus from Wes I got last year grew into a evil beast so I sold him and now he resides with an larger Atf (batf I believe), a pair of armatus, a larger peacock bass, pair of Rays and a few other fish I traded the guy including a datnoid and a pair of delhezi bichirs in a 240. Nice tank.

DB junkie here has his argentine bighead brassy dorado with a variety of tankmates too. He reports that these Arg brassy are much more mild compared to your everyday franky dorado.
Triggera had a large trio he kept with many popular large oddball fish. His at 20 inches killed a 22 inch Jardini out of self defense he said but other than that was peaceful. I've actually seen many combos but you're right Most of them seem to have an abundance of dithers and tankmates

Yeah you're right if they don't like a fish that fish better pray to the fish Gods for help lol. Only thing I could've wished for is that it was actually 3 inches instead of under 2, but doesn't bother me at all dorados grow fast so he won't have to stay in the fugly algae covered 10 gallon. Wes is the man!

I have my Argentinian Big Headed Dorado with another of the same. They swim side by side in harmony and have never bothered any tank mates EXCEPT a Franky Dorado. Added the Franky and instant sparring. Very quick circles like cats fighting. Next morning Franky was cowerring in the corner with about half its scales missing. Other then that never an issue and I keep a pretty decent selection of teeth (mostly Characins)some cats, and some Bony Tongues.....

I've kept a lot of Dorado and at this point feel like Brassies and Frankies are 2 completely different temperaments.......

I'd second Wes being the man but since you have a cheap lil Brassy and I have just the opposite I'll just have to be content being jealous..... lmao.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume it's a brassy yet lol... At 5-6 inches we'll be able to see it clearly I think. This dorado is tiny! When it's full it looked similar to yours when it was smaller with the round head but when he's hungry he looks kind of like a reg franky?!?

Rn however it's looking pretty good to be a argentine brassy but I'm not 110% convinced... I'm not really sure what to look for besides the round head and a scale count tbh

Scale count is inconclusive.. The # on the LL overlaps in Brassies and Frankies. Liam found this out when he counted them on his monster......

Oh yeah I do remember that... Although I thought it was fairly obvious that big one that died was a franky. However I do remember he had a couple more that he thought were brassy but really were frankies too. I honestly think that the head shape on the 2nd one isn't natural probably ran into something hard or bad genetics or something since they're farmed in large numbers they probably end up with some funkier looking fish.

More that I think about it and look at this lil guy I'm thinking he's a brassy. Collection point and Wes's word behind it how much more sure can you get? Lol.. He's Playing nice with the giant danios too ;)
