Local Aquarium Club/Society

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I live in Kansas City. Our club, the Heart of America Aquarium Society has been around since the 50's. https://www.kcfishclub.org/ I started going to meetings in the 90's and like all of these clubs interest comes and goes. We usually have about 30 people at our monthly meetings. Over in St Louis they have a much bigger club, http://missouriaquariumsociety.com/FishHeads_Forum/index.php?sid=507f68ffc03d55ec170bfb7f954b553e and to the north is Des Moines, http://www.iowaaquatichobbyist.com/ There is a squirrly moderator on here named Peanut Power that goes to both KC and St Louis functions.

The speaker was Jennifer Reynolds specialist in freshwater rays at the Vancouver Aquarium.
Beyond simple ID, feeding, filtration, and care, she spoke about tank/enclosure size (minimum 300gal for the smallest rays) and the dangers of crossbreeding (causing immune and internal disease problems, and maintaining species integrity, and ID confusion).
Very cool Duanes! Agree 100 percent on the oppurtunity to get stuff you normally wouldn't and at the pricing.. Who spoke on Rays? Probably something i would like to see

Interesting on the immune issues with hybrids (they are very popular atm) I have never heard this.

Nice! Hopefully you went home with something... not sure about CNJ hopefully someone can chime in.

Thanks! I only went home with a small group of black neon tetras for my 25g high. Trying to thin all my stuff before my wife kills me sold off a lot. Hopefully there is something a little closer to me.

my local "fishbox" website is mostly slow except for the buy and sell area. The amount of traffic on threads is not high because we do mostly online chat, information exchange on Facebook, and offline activities like swap meets.

Awesome! I think MFK should invade NJAS next month...lol
LOL! Last month NJAS was invaded by the New Jersey Aquatic Gardners Association. About 20 of their members showed up for the speaker program on plants. There had to be a least 70 bags of plants in the monthly auction.
It was nice meeting other MFK members at the auction on Sunday. Hope you guys picked up some nice stuff.
