Why are Goldfish so underrated in the fish keeping hobby?

he seemed really cartoony in the way he defended fancy goldfish, but I can't hate on someone with the level of passion he has for them.

I'd say your pet store qualifies more as the exception than the rule. Almost every pet store I've been to has had an entire goldfish section.
No, it is not an exception to my area and few LFS closer to me, they have really small section of goldfish but they have huge selection of livebearers and fancy cichlids. Even my Petco, Walmart and Petsmart are like that.
I don't know what to tell you then. Lol. There is nothing like that situation here, or anywhere I've been.

As my point still stands. Fancy goldfish isn't only fish that has health issues in the aquarium.
A moot point, given that I never argued that it was. It's just one of the factors that I think could make them less desirable.
Lets not overlook the human stupidity factor too. Its been proven that if you have two identical products but one is listed as worth more, that's the one they'll want. Its like trying to give something away on craigslist... you might not ever get a response... offer it for $150.00 though and you'll have people wanting to haggle you for it. I experienced that first hand with a pool table.
