I'm sorry if people disagree but I think it should be common sense? I've never seen a turtle or a tortoise that wasn't on tv, but I still knew the difference..

For the last five years or so, the schools where I live have had local wildlife rangers come around two or three times a year and teach the kids about our native wildlife, and invasive species - and what to do/who to call if you find either or. Its a shame more schools don't do something like it..

Also, I'm not trying to argue, sorry if it comes across that way..

It is common sense that you can't just assume that what you've learned from your school in your area, or what you've watched on your TV is the standard for everyone in the world. Some watch MTV, other watch Animal Planets. Back home in 11th and 12th grades, they taught us in PE how to take an AK47 apart, clean it, oil it, and put it together and how to use it, to get us ready for draft by the time we done with high school. In some other countries, martial art is part of their PE. Did you learn any of it in your school?

Fish and game authorities... I doubt it will happen, but there definitely are enforcement officers that go after people selling or poaching T&E species. Bare minimum, it would be nice if someone tracked her down to tell her how stupid she is. Hopefully she gets the message to stop killing endangered species.

How did you come up with the conclusion that she killed that tortoise? From the movie, she tossed it in the pond. Whether that tortoise died from that toss is quite a leap to prove.

Sorry I should have worded that better, I see it as general knowledge to know the difference - that doesn't mean that everyone should be knowledgeable on the subject, but the majority of people should have a vague idea about the difference. And common sense not to throw random animals into the nearest body of water. and no, I didn't learn such things from school as I was in college when the program started and its specifically for primary and high school students. I was lucky enough to have grandparents who enjoyed nature documentaries, hiking etc. They taught me most of what I know wildlife wise, but I understand how lucky I was to have people around me who wanted to teach me such things, and not everyone is lucky enough to have that.

This is a little hard to explain, but I'll try anyways. I'm lucky enough to have a decent knowledge on the wild life in my area, and if I found a native species I'd try to help, if I found what appeared to be an amphibious animal, I'd place it near the water and let it find its own way there. If I found something that I recognized to be an invasive species on the other hand, I'd call the local ranger and let them take it from there. If I found something that I did not recognise at all, once again I'd call the local ranger. The problem with throwing animals into random bodies of water is that those species may not belong there, and might cause serious damage to the eco system in that area. This may not be the case this time, but its still a real possibility that I think many people overlook. Again, not trying to argue, just voicing an opinion.

On a serious note, it's ridiculous for fish and game or any authority to waste time tracking her down. Animal die every day. Just an honest mistake. Hope fish and game show up the next time you lose a fish hypocrites.

It would be hypocritical if anyone on here were keeping endangered species in captivity. There is a distinction to be made between the death of a sustainably sourced aquarium fish and a species listed under the endangered species act. If you were keeping endangered fishes, I would hope fish and wildlife would show up at your door, too.
