Just picked this bad boy up today at Shark Aquarium. Hes about 10 inches. I was going to get a black wolf but my buddy UnstoppableJayD UnstoppableJayD told me about the Lacerdae. I have read online that they are really hard to get due to no imports and I have seen them for sale for a few hundred. Is this info still accurate? I got this guy for a steal.

I unfortunately cant get a pic of under his jaw which is what i read could give a positive ID. Anyone know based off these pics the origin and value? Just curious.

Not readily available. So a few hundred dollars is about right. Especially for a 10in fish. The marketplace had a few for sale but pick ups and were low $100's and were smaller. I assume were needed to be sold asap. So not too far off. If it's a fish on my bucket list then any price for a fish like this will be ok for me, IMO. True lacs are worth it. Cannot tell the origin of the fish based on pics. They have a vast distribution and changes with environment. Jawshot will give the ID. Great pick up.

Thanks for the info. These can come from Argentina and El Salvador? I also see Brazil as an origin. Hard to find info online.

Argentina is a yes. But not sure about El Salvador as I've not heard of any coming from there. There would be mala and maybe microlepes. If from El Salvador then maybe it was transplanted there for food. This was something mentioned in research papers if I remember correctly.

If you can catch it and hold it upside down. Should be able to get an ID for sure. Although watch ur fingers.

LOL ya the last thing I wanted to do is try to lift him up. Maybe I will catch him swimming up 1 day. Now when you say positive ID you would be able to tell which country and sub species? If there is a sub species.

Perhaps get some smelly food and hold it (probably with forceps) at the surface near the glass, make him swim up to get it?

Should be able to tell if it's mala, lac, intermedius, etc. Not the collection point. I would see if you can contact the store and ask where it was imported from. Maybe the importer can tell owner where the collection point is from.

Also since its been mentioned that they're being moved to other countries for food then the distinction needs to be re-evaluated.

I've seen intermedius for sale from Mexico if I remember correctly. I was a bit confused. Never heard of these fish going up that far. I never saw the fish and I don't doubt the seller but there's more questions for sure.
