planning a tapajos biotope

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Would suggest checking out tapajos severum, they are my hidden gems.
I took a peek at your fish, you definitely have some beauties there. If I had more room in here I'd be looking at severums or something like that, possibly festivums even. I have some Heros sp. Curare that I'm growing out so my severums itch is being scratched for the time being. Haha

so a small update on this tank, I had to medicate a couple fish from this tank for suspected columnaris and have moved the Oscar out (the geos look like they have never been more relaxed) and I am finally moving on to creating the actual biotope.
I moved in some stalks of Hydrocotyle leucocephala. I have a couple power heads that I was using to keep junk from settling on the bottom that were blowing the hydrocotyle around pretty violently so I turned off one and I'm going to re position the other but so far so good. I have just a double t8 (I think, maybe t5) shop light up top, I hope that is enough light for these plants.
on Saturday I also pulled my smallest C. regain out of my 50g and dropped her in to see what will happen, I was a little worried that she would be eaten, and she is doing great cruising around like she owns the place, even the biggest male geo doesn't even pay her any mind. so that has me very stoked. it kind inspired me to think about some smaller tank mates as well. I suppose it will depend on how crowded it gets once I have moved all 5 c. regani in, but I was thinking about possibly adding a harem of apistogramma agassizii or even a couple dicrossus maculatus into the mix, prob the a. agassizii though. so from there I started thinking on leaf litter in the aquarium and it seems to me to be the best idea if I want a true representation of a natural setting. so that's got me pretty excited, I've never used leaf litter before so this will be a bit of a learning experience. I'm a little worried about having junk on the bottom building up and screwing will the water cleanliness. I'm also expecting to occasionally have a leaf blocking my filter intake. so if anyone has any tips for a tank with leaf litter in it let me know.

Looking good so far. I think it may need some plants. maybe another time. Like the regani pikes!

you might be right about the plants but those will wait for now at least, but yea the little pikes are outstanding. The colours and such are amazing and they are cool little fish to watch. The female in that pair that I point out in the video chases away the geos when she is in serious spawning mode. It's crazy to see such a small fish throw itself against a fish that's easily 10x it's size. Would recommend c. regani to anyone

Great tank! I agree that adding some plants will really bring the 'scape to life. I'm kind of going for the same idea with my 125g tank, with the addition of my oscar instead of taking him out like in yours. :p I'll be looking at getting some atabapos red pikes to round out my stocking (current stocking is 1 oscar, 9 geo tapajos red heads, and 1 L134 pleco). Not quite a tapajos biotope like yours, but pretty similar to your stocking. You have good taste!

That is pretty similar, how does your oscar get along with your geos? Mine bullied them a little but not too crazy although someone slept in that room one night and said he has one of the female geos "cornered" so maybe he was a closet monster, but in general it seemed opposite to a lot of what you read online. I would totally try the mix again if the tank was bigger.

Those geos look nice as ever, I have come to the conclusion I won't accept a tapajos scape without heros sp. tapajos.

They get along great, but the oscar is only 6", still some growing and maturing to do. I've been keeping an eye on them. He is only a "bully" during feeding time. Never bites anyone, just chases them away from the food spot. Any other times besides feeding the oscar ignores the geos.
