New 270 gallon characin tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tell me how u design. Im thinkin of going with Joey's design (
). 75 gallon sump filled with ceramic rings.

Since I won't be using the overflow for a lot of flow bc I'm not using a sump just a drip I decided to make one like this.....the hosing is temporary I will be using pvc instead and plan on have 3 u tubes for safe measures just in case 1 or 2 loose syphon which I highly doubt will happen.......at the bottom of the bucket you can see tubing which leads the waste water outside

Idc how it looks since I will box it all in with 1 piece of plywood once everything is set.

I'd drill a hole at ur water level for the drip drain using a bulkhead.... not sure ur drip gph will be enough to keep those siphons going. Then u could knix that bucket and crate all together. Your drip drain will be more reliable/trouble free without those overflow tubes. Drilling fiberglass tanks is easy, use a small tooth hole saw made for wood. you can drill a small amt on each side to prevent chipping of the epoxy paint/fiberglass.

I don't want to drill the tank thats why I rigged this up.....there's no reason for it to loose it's syphon when there are 3 tubes....it's the same exact concept as an overflow box

reg. h.o.b. style overflow boxes are not used for drip system drains... theres not enough gph to power them. 3 tubes wont help u any, thats just more space to accumliate air over time... ud need even more gph 2 keep those tubes full of water... It is possible 2 drip drain an undrilled tank...but ud need a smaller siphon tube at 3/8" to hold the siphon of only 2-4gph. Its alot more trouble than its worth to not just drill the tank. Ud only need a small hole, 1/2" bulkhead will save u alot of headache and wet floors in the future. I commend ur innovation, but im just tryin 2 help u avoid a flood. Gravity is alot more reliable than a siphon.

Yes it's obvious drilling is the way to go and that's how I had it on my stock tank but I would have to drill the tank while it's filled and I really don't want to Risk it cracking

Does fiberglass crack easy?..

i wouldnt worry much about cracking it, that fiberglass is pretty strong. Ive blown through fiberglass tanks with 3.5" bits before to run 2" pipe. to be overly cautious u can lower ur water level, clamp a piece of ply on the inside as a backer and drill from the outside. Look for a drill bit with multiple small teeth also. The more teeth the better. Id prob still drill on each side tho so it comes out clean/to prevent the epoxy paint from chipping. Ur guide bit in the center of the hole saw will keep u lined up on both sides. (ime chipping always occurs as u go through the opposite side so ive started doing half n half each way)..Nerve racking to drill a brand new tank i know... u should b more than fine tho. I also like using battery ppwered drills, the corded type are too powerful and are alot more prone to snagging/chipping. too much torque. Be patient while u drill and confident! ull b happy when its over lol...

Not sure if u have a "handyman"/true vale/ or ace hardware in ur area... they have these smaller tooth bits opposed to homedepot/lowes who tend to stock the larger/less toothy ones.

Yea I have those hole saws that's what I used to drill thru my polyerathane tank.

How low do you think I should lower the water when drilling?......halfway?....considering the hole I will be drilling will be towards the top

id prob go halfway just 2 be safe or far enough to not get ur drill wet... good excuse for a waterchange lol...
