Can I feed my fish this dog food?

I do realize that you get what you pay for with fish food and have been looking for what to switch to that'd be better.

See link in my previous post. The feed from Ziegler is pretty typical of commercial farm feed - wheat middlings, soybean meal, feather meal, and yeah, you are getting exactly what you are paying for. Personally I wouldn't feed that to my fish if you gave me a 50# bag for free.

I think you are mellowing in your old age:p

Do you think it is better when feeding a variety of different (dried) foods to mix them or feed them each separately?

I mix mine in a huge tub.

Much appreciate your take, RD. RD. I always try to read your posts on nutrition and not only.

Your personal standards for fish food are a reflection of your professionalism in the subject matter and are high, of course, for us mere mortals but your educational efforts pay off. I am more than sure about my case.

At the very least your posts (taken altogether) explain well what it is that we do that is not the best for our pets and how we might have been hurting them by feeding sub par foods.

I wish you had already published a monogram or a treatise on the subject, however concise, something we can always refer to instead of asking you the same questions over and over or combing through old threads here and on PlanetCatfish as I do.

Your help on fish nutrition, ingredients, etc. is invaluable to us. I realize science keeps evolving and things change but we can't ask for more than to know the current state of the art, which you convey.

+1 that

I try and feed my tropicals food that has fish meal as its main ingredient then shrimp meal before fillers

My bad, something that I didn't add previously about the fat content, the main source of fat in this dog food is not only very high for tropical species of fish, it is also terrestrial based. (canola oil) Fish should be consuming fats derived primarily from fish, not terrestrial based plants. Dogs should be consuming fats derived primarily from animals, not terrestrial based plants.

Personally I wouldn't feed this food to my dogs, let alone my fish, but that's just me.

..... and while I am at it, allow me to further explain the complete farce that many of these so called *grain free* pet food formulas are. Using this food as an example, while they promote the fact that their food is grain free, they list peas, followed by potatoes, then more potatoes, canola oil, and more peas ...... ALL terrestrial based. I understand the inclusion of plant matter, having said that, it's inclusion rate in EVERY dog and cat food should be limited - and terrestrial based fat should never be used in a food designed for, dogs, cats, or fish.

I knew a lady that told me, "it's a catfish so I feed it cat food."
I think the only reason it wasn't dead was because it was a gnarly channel cat. Of course she had it in a 3foot tank so I'm sure it just grew to the tank size right?

That's terrible haha. When I worked at the fish store some lady came in for gold fish for her red tail cat. All of our gold fish were dying so we weren't gonna sell them. The fish manager at the time was waiting for all of them to die. The tank was full of dead fish and this lady tells the manager she'll take all of the dead ones for like ten dollars or something. And she took them haha. Some people are just crazy.
