Trying this again....zebrina and discus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very nicely done! I hope I can get my 220 to look that good. I will be keeping discus in it as well. It will house one or two fire eels and 8-12 discus. I am also considering adding one of the "teacup" ray species. Not sure if hystrix or retic would be better.

Also, do you mind if I aske where you got your discus?

I plan on getting juvies and growing them out in my 29 before adding them to the 220.
I buy all my wilds from snookn21. He is a solid vendor. Others go through Mark Chen aka Discus Origins. Jeff Rapps also gets wilds in from time to time.

Thank you. I pulled my hystrix out of here because he did nothing but hide and eat. Lazy bastard he is.

I just saw your other thread about the move. Best of luck getting him better.

Do you know if any of those vendors you mentioned carry captive bred discus. I am wanting to go with some of the more brightly colored types.

Also, did you grow yours out yourself or did you buy them already at adult size?

They only do wild. I bought my captives from Hans and I highly recommend him.

I bought them grown. Growing out discus is a pain. You need frequent water changes. Also, I've found wilds to be hardier. My water temp is between 78 and 80 with the wilds.

So 9 months later, how does/did it work out? I got 2 zebrina I want to put with my wild greens, and so far you're the only ond I csn find who has done the combo.
Thanks

It didn't work out long term. The Zebrina, who were easy going and friendly have grown more aggressive with age.

I had to sell the discus. It worked for a while though but I wouldn't recommend it.

To give you an idea, my Zebrina are now in a 225 with two stingrays, 2 Intermedia peacock bass, and four severums and they control the tank and push all the other fish around.
