One Month Update of New Lapradei Bichirs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
dmd is a chubby chaser! Lol jk always looking for a fat bichir.

D dmd I'll try with the lights off. Funny thing is this guy will cruise the tank actively but shy at eating.

LOL! Chubby chaser

My weeksii is also active and will cruise around and completely pass over food. The night feedings will help. You will see big fat weeksii belly in no time.

do you turn off the room light too so the tank is pitch black? I tried it last night with the room lights off but turn on my 1.5w LED light I setup to mimic moonlighting. He took a few pieces of tilapia right away. Then the dat jacked all the food. LoL

I make sure it is dark. I do a low watt led light on a separate timer to mimic the dusk/dawn effect. I try and wait about 1/2 an hour after my timer shuts off so the cichlids are not going to go at it. My snook once ate so much tilapia with the lights on the dusk effect that he turned pure white and was bloated looking sitting on the bottom of the tank for three days! Feeding with the lights off and completely dark, I see him in the morning and can tell he did not get any of it.

It's sort of hard for me to make it pitch black. My led clock illuminate the room. I can still see the fish silhouette thru the tanks. By the way, do u assumed the food got eaten and go to sleep after dumping in the food? Isn't that not practical?

I have some external light that comes in through the front door glass from a neighbors light and a few few digital clocks and what not but it it mostly dark.

As to the food, I have done it so much I know how much food to add so that there are no leftovers. I never have uneaten food in the morning. For my crew I chop up about 1/2 to 3/4 of a tilapia filet. These are the cheap ones you get at Walmart so they are not that large. Ive seen how the pieces move around in the current during the day and I dont have issues with any food going into the filters so I am sure the fish are getting the food. Plus the big fatty teugelsi will be plump along with the weeksii, in the morning.

I feed the same value pack size tilapia from Walmart as well. I diced about 2-3 fillet each feeding. Bass and dat eat a lot more than the bichirs.

Thankfully I have a pearsei who has not developed a taste for tilapia. But I have to watch the massivore because it will gobble that down like there is no tomorrow.
