Sad news means new opportunity

Oh neat idea. As I understand, Kribs are pretty easy to gender. Can I just chuck a male and female together and they'll get it on or do they need to have the whole buy 6, let 2 pair and then they kill off the others shtick? That would be awesome to have kribs, a ctenompa and a butterfly fish. Can a 45 Gal handle it?

Would the kribs nip at the butterfly fish?

The Cteno's available at my LFS are about the size of a full grown Krib typically. How would i go about stocking this? Just chuck them all in or start with cteno or what?
Get a small group, they will chase away the others when they pair

They should ignore the butterfly fish

Try and get smaller bush fish and smaller kribs for best results

That's the plan. Bush fish and butterflies are always available at my LFS it seems, but kribs kinda come and go.

What order should I stock the tank in?

Maybe kribs first and grow em a bit. make sure that they are 2/3s of the length of the butterfly and bush fish that are available

that was my thinking, but wouldn't allowing kribs to establish themselves first make them defend when something new comes in? All the kribs I can typically get are basically just baby fallout from the lfs.

I could probably add butterfly fish and kribs, right? Either way, I plan to add a few more plants as well.

Do kribs dig/mess with plants or snails?

In a 45 gallon they won't too much, you could actually keep a few females to a male for a harem if you like.

You can add all of them togethet, its just the kribs need to be small enough to pair and big enough not to get eaten.

They don't dig or attack plants

Ah, I might start with the kribs then. I think I could add the butterfly fish at the same time, as well as 3-4 plants. Would there be a conflict with butterfly fish and baby kribs?

Pretty much not, butterflies only eat on the surface, and the kribs cling down by the parents

Probably not.

Talked with my LFS. They happen to have all three species of interest in stock right now! Yay!

Just one more question: the kribs are about an inch long only but apparently the ctenos are about that size too. What size ratio is appropriate to avoid the cteno from eating them? If they are the same size I'll definitely get them all in one shot, but if not I may have to reconsider. They eat anything about half their body size, correct?

Another option is a tank divider, which might be the way I go.
