Sad news means new opportunity

I have adored butterfly fish for a while. How would they do in a 45 gallon? Just one with some bottom dweller to compliment? Do they eat pellet?
They would be fine in that and can be brought onto pellets. If you have good surface planting you could do 2, just make sure they have calm spots to chill out.

You can do some mid/ bottom fish like loaches or non-nippy medium fish like some rosey barbs or similar

why is that? Hmm. I am thinking of a cichlid since I have a big thing of cichlid food laying around but I don't want a pain in the ass.

Keep in mind other than plants and snails, these will be the only fish in the tank.

I may be biting off more than I want with the breeding, but I do want to have cichlids breed. I think I'm sold on cichlids, unless some other fantastic suggestion comes up.

Will Neolamprologus be able to kill snails that have operculi and lived through bichirs? will they attack them? Do they dig?
because they were trying to kill everything in the tank, even my dithers

1 or 2 butterfly fish, a leopard ctenopoma, small shoal of Congo tetras. You could probably do some cories for the bottom also.

That sounds amazing, I'd probably need more plants too. Would the Ctenompa eat plants? This might actually be the way I go.

Are Ctenompa and butterfly fish particularly hardy though? I don't want sensitive whiney fish.

Ctenopoma is completely carnivorous and won't touch plants. same with the butterfly fish.

Congo tetras are pretty whiney though

What could go with butterflyfish and Ctenompa that isn't a whiney little wuss?
Well its hard since the ctenopoma gets 6" and can eat things almost half its size. Maybe a catfish or kribensis cichlids

My experience with Kribs is the same as with any kind of barb- you can say they are peaceful all you want, but ultimately they are total dicks

Would Ctenompa and butterfly fish do okay on cichlid pellets?

That should work, just add some frozen foods and you are good to go.

Kribs won't bother those fish too much, and eventually the ctenopoma will reduce the numbers of small baby kribs in your tank, the ctenopoma is too big for them to easily harm anyway

Oh neat idea. As I understand, Kribs are pretty easy to gender. Can I just chuck a male and female together and they'll get it on or do they need to have the whole buy 6, let 2 pair and then they kill off the others shtick? That would be awesome to have kribs, a ctenompa and a butterfly fish. Can a 45 Gal handle it?

Would the kribs nip at the butterfly fish?

The Cteno's available at my LFS are about the size of a full grown Krib typically. How would i go about stocking this? Just chuck them all in or start with cteno or what?
