Updates from the 300

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is what I'm familiar with on Ansorgii variety that has been mentioned in prior mfk forums and elsewhere.

* Tikinsso - is what everybody is getting in some time now. They all look similar with the lap like lateral line.
* Nigeria/ogun - patterns are usually on lighter side or no markings.
* Koloton - green hues on marking and body. Checkerboard all over and no lateral line.

thanks Vancouver_98683 Vancouver_98683 and J jaws7777 . Recently heard the word "Koloton" thrown around and had no idea what that meant.

Names based on catch locations get thrown around because you can find characteristics in these fish from those areas. While all laps, when you say Koliba, Koloton, Faranah or Nigerian you know that you can be dealing with a certain color, pattern or even head shape.

So koliba and koloton are confirmed lap's i remember the debate about them being possibly a seperate species

The scientific community has not officially described them as separate species. Due to their differences. They were given their 'Koliba' and 'Koloton' names from suppliers, dealers, and then supported by us. This also applies 'Faranah' and 'Guinean' laps. The list goes on for Endlicheri too, i.e. 'Dabola', 'Faranah' , 'Nigerian', 'Black & White Volta'. To sum it up, they're all collection areas and rivers.

Ponder this fellas/gals. Why do ornate, senegal, Teugelsi, nigerian lap, or all the upper jaws species don't have the collection tag. 2 reasons. They look the same and heavily farmed. Therefore, the demand for our hobby wasn't there.

So, what are your opinions? Agree, disagree, or just not sure. This is a great topic in where it's not discussed due to many uncertainties.

Agree, we just have to go by what the vendor tells us, then its up to use to see whats the difference that seperates them, but its hard to tell without having the actual fish in your tank.

It's strange. two of my old ansorgii had green hues on markings but later on the markings changed colors.
