Ordering Delhezis today!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sooo I called a couple places and they both said I didn't make it in time for a delivery that would come today so I figured I'd order this morning so I'd have a night to sleep on what I'm going to decide on. Today is my birthday so what better thing to do on your birthday than to order fish?

I'm really hung up on ordering from worldwidefishandpets because their Dels are 5" but they don't have ornates but wetspot has 3" dels and 3" ornates. Those 2" has me hung up.

Also, the 5" are $4 cheaper.

http://fishonlinerus.com/t/bichir this place is $10 cheaper per poly and the shipping is only $15! Edit: ehh.. $15 scares me. That doesn't sound like overnight to me.

Delhezis are awesome bichirs! But I also think it would be fun to have different polys. You could keep multiple upper jaws in there. I'm not sure if the 18" width of your tank is a prohibitor for some of the LJs, maybe you could do captive bred. Others here can chime in on that one. I think in my brain I have 24" depth being best for most LJs.

I also have 3 ropefish and I am a big fan. They're not girthy like the bichirs but they are long, swim really gracefully (when they're not being spazzes) and look like they're smiling. Mine snuggle with my 2 bichirs too. You'd want 3+. They like plants but I don't think they need plants. Mine LOVE swimming through them and hanging off them willy nilly though.

For other stocking you have options. Any specific interests? Since you like cichlids what about some more mellow ones like severums or something?

Wet Spot is my LFS and I just checked out all of their polys on Sunday. They only have one Del right now, it is closer to 4-5" and I only saw 2 ornates. They were 3 tops! They might have more that I didn't see, but they do typically keep their polys grouped together unless there's a big size discrepancy. They have one Sen who is quite a bit larger than the other babies and he was in a tank with another larger WC Palmas Palmas.

I would certainly call Wet Spot today to see what fish they actually have on hand. They open at 10am Pacific time. They could also let you know when they are going to have more bichirs. They have an amazing seletion of potential tankmates for you, too.

(It was crazy busy this weekend!)

I wish I could help you on where to order your fish. I have never had to order online.

I know fishonlinerus, the $15 shipping is 2 day and you're probably right to be concerned this time of year (or any time of year). I ordered a couple months ago for the $15 shipping and was contacted by the seller suggesting overnight. Their overnight to me in NY was $35. I will say that all 3 fish I received from them were beautiful and healthy

I'm going to go with cb dels and ornates. I've been looking at green severums and might go with them. Funny you suggested those, I like them a lot.

thanks for the insider knowledge :D I'll give them a call when they're open. I'm in Texas so it will be a couple hours or so. I see that their green sevs are only 1.5". Are they going to get eaten?

Maybe a little too small. My del was maybe 7ish inches and put down 3 2 to 3 inch mollies. The sevs are a bit higher bidied but would still concern me

I think it's hard to judge because you won't know the temperaments of the bichirs that you're getting. I'd trust my 6-7 " del with smaller fish - currently lives with kuhli loaches which are very worm-like and these guys like worms. My Palmas Palmas of the same size ate a few of them. (I knew it was a risk, I couldn't get them out of the tank. Cuz kuhlis. ;) )

Do you have a small tank you can use for growing out the sevs for a little while?

Also, they have a lot of severums in there of varying sizes. Ask about sizes with those guys too. I think even 2" would give you more breathing room, esp. if you get smaller bichirs. the 3 inch UJ bichirs don't have very large mouths.
