Are fish flakes a good stable diet for a baby Bichir?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Do you bave a spare tank for the ornate ? Sounds like trapped air. You can treat with sepsom salt i think its 1 teaspoon per 5 gal of water kno4te kno4te ?

I think in the long run yiu might have issues getting the ornate fed. I think the red terror and jd will go for the tilapia.

You can cut small peices of tilapia and mash it up then cover one of carnivore pellets in it like a meat ball. Ive done this when pellet training and it always works.

1tsp per 5g if adding to the tank.

Sorry for the lack of responses on this lately. My little bichir was dead by the morning after it began showing symptoms that something was wrong. I suppose it could have been the diet I was feeding it (blood worms, and flakes) it never showed any interest in brine or mysis shrimp for some reason. Honestly, not sure if I'm gonna try this one again...I'm just not sure what could have gone wrong. I was easily able to feed it with feeding tongs so it had plenty of chances to eat (as far as I know) and really it's a very quiet tank, before my bechir died, I had even ended up moving my salvini into another tank since my festae and it were beginning to have mutual disputes.. At any rate I really appreciate all of the assistance you offered me, for what it's worth I did end up moving the little bichir to my qt tank and treated with aquarium salt...is that the same as epsom salt? I'd love to be able to grow my own bichir and my 40 gallon tank I think would be a superb grow-out tank for a baby bichir since it is so calm... But again, I am a keeper of cichlids..not bichirs so I could be very wrong.
Currently I also have a 20 gallon long aquarium established with only a couple of loaches in it, I had for a time even considered trying to start a bichir in that tank since it's an even smaller and more controllable environment than my 40 gallon. Not sure it would have made any difference for my bichir though. At any rate, any further thoughts or advice on what could have happened or what I should consider doing before i even consider attempting this again are very much appreciated!

No one can be fully sure of what happened. The bloodworms and flames ain't the best diet for any bichir but probably not what did this ornate in for you. It likely developed a infection/malformation of the swim bladder. Probably when it was upside down....you weren't seeing things. These things happen on occasion as we continue to see more and more captive breed fish.

Despite that...there was likely nothing that could've been done for it.

Reconsider a bichir. Maybe one of the smaller upper jaws. I'm sure the next go around will be better for you. Plus the bichir forum and members will be here.

Sorry for the loss Ryan029 Ryan029 . Hope to see you post again with some polys. We will be here waiting for you friend.

P.S. If you go back to cichlids then I'm out. I don't know anything about them.

Del are upper jaws, cb grows 10"-12" or less, WC might grow 16" but ive never seen one hit that range.
alright, of course all my lfs has had are a bunch of ornates..They have been sitting around for a over a month now though so perhaps the ones that are left will be the 'hardier' ones? I'm half tempted to just go get another ornate because it's what is available right now.

If they are sitting around that long then may have got something while there.
The condolences are appreciated, i'm not used to having my pets die in such sudden and traumatic fashions... It was pretty discouraging.

I'm really interested in a Delhezi, would this be among the smaller upper jaws your speaking of?
Like Polyaddict86 Polyaddict86 mentioned. Should be good. Delhezis look nice.
